There was a federal immigration enforcement action in San FranciscorCOs
Diamond Heights neighborhood, near the Castro LGBTQ district, February
13, according to Mayor Daniel Lurie.
rCLMy office is aware of the immigration enforcement action in Diamond
Heights earlier today,rCY Lurie stated. rCLWe are not aware of any other immigration enforcement action in the city today. We will continue to
monitor the situation closely and remain committed to upholding the
values and laws of our city.rCY
Lurie also stated that the San Francisco Police Department was not
involved, as per San FranciscorCOs sanctuary city policy.
rCLThe San Francisco Police Department was not involved and does not
assist with federal civil immigration enforcement. That will not change
as long as IrCOm mayor,rCY Lurie stated. "Our policies make our communities safer and build trust with law enforcement. Everyone should feel safe
reporting a crime, seeking help, or accessing services rCo regardless of immigration status. I am in touch with the Rapid Response Network and
community organizations to ensure communities continue to receive
accurate information.rCY
According to an Instagram post from the Rapid Response Network, an
elderly female nanny was taken into custody on her way to work. The
network stated it had confirmed the woman was arrested and was followed
in her vehicle by rCLmultiple unmarked vehicles.rCY
After she exited her car, the unmarked vehicles blocked the driveway and
agents stated they were looking for a person in the neighborhood. Agents
did not present identifying information or a warrant when asked, the
post continued.
A reason for the detention has not been disclosed, nor has the identity
of the reported detainee. The network is now working with attorneys to
secure the womanrCOs release, according to the post.
There has been federal immigration enforcement in San Francisco largely
near the immigration courthouse in the financial district downtown. In
October, President Donald Trump called off a planned surge into the city
at LurierCOs request.
The Bay Area Reporter reported last week that Castro-area stakeholders
were implementing options for how to respond to a surge cities like
Minneapolis have seen.
Gay Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman represents both
Diamond Heights and the Castro as District 8 supervisor.
In a phone interview February 13, Mandelman said he doesnrCOt rCLknow more information than the Rapid Response Network or that the mayor posted,rCY
except to say there has been sporadic immigration enforcement outside of downtown since the second Trump administration started, but this is the
first incident in his district he is aware of.
rCLItrCOs disturbing,rCY he said. rCLI cannot remember something like this happening in my district but rCa I do think this has been happening.rCY
Three gay men are running to replace Mandelman as D8 supervisor. Gary
McCoy, the former constituent caseworker for Congressmember Nancy Pelosi
(D-San Francisco); Emanuel rCLMannyrCY Yekutiel, a cafe owner; and Michael Nguyen, an elected member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee.
Nguyen told the B.A.R., rCLWhat happened in Diamond Heights is unconscionable.rCY
He added, rCLThis is what state-sanctioned terror looks like, and itrCOs happening in our neighborhood,rCY he continued. rCLAs the son of Vietnamese refugees, I know what my parents fled rCo the fear of authorities who
could take you without warning. No nanny in San Francisco should
experience that terror. No family in District 8 should wonder if theyrCOre next.rCY
McCoy stated that he is rCLoutraged by reports that federal agents
abducted an elderly nanny in Diamond Heights.rCY
rCLTearing caregivers out of our communities doesnrCOt make anyone safer; it does the opposite,rCY he continued. rCLWe need real measures to keep ICE out
of San Francisco and District 8, and we need leaders willing to stand up
and say enough is enough.rCY
Yekutiel was also outraged, he stated.
rCLThis paramilitary secret police snatching people without warrants does
not belong in our sanctuary city and in our country,rCY he stated Friday evening. rCLAs the child of an immigrant, IrCOm honestly disgusted to see
this treatment of our brothers and sisters. ItrCOs deeply un-American and shameful.rCY
