Nice! Glad you are back. Wish I could have helped more, but I'm not up to speed on the latest version of WWIV or what needs to happen on the Linux version for network related tasks.

I still run a super "classic" setup over here, which under the hood is really WWIV 4.24a with bits of 4.30 in it and tons of mods.

Running the original WWIV before the internet explosion, I think that that is the exact version that I have backed up on my NAS.

Hopefully I can get to the point where I can help others with setup and configuration in Linux, at least that's my goal.

I agree, and have been thinking about what the future holds foran archaic but treasured hobby and past-time.

I have nearly an hour commute to and from work, and was thinking yesterday that if we couild somehow evolve the BBS platform, something more updated and secure (communications), I wonder if that would make a difference.

Technically, that is still what I am running. The core of 4.24a, some 4.30, and a boat load of mods. My setup still using the SIO drivers and using eComstation (as a VM). Like a blend of history and modern day - since it is all running on VMware ESXi 6.7.

I'm still insanely jealous that you're running the 'original' code, and by that I mean when we had to pay for the right to modify the software.

Looking at my setup I still have Front Door and everything in the image, several programs from John Dailey that helped to automate a lot of functions for the BBS, etc.

Maybe one day when this version of the system is at a 'pause' I will look to see what happens when I introduce my old BBS to Dosbox =)

I had imaged my physical PC many years ago that ran OS/2 and moved all the data and everything to a VM in ESXi. I moved from OS/2 to eCS shortly afterwards as well.

The nodes of the BBS run on eCS 2.2 and all the tossing/D'Bridge etc is on a Windows 7 VM. The eCS BBS nodes have mapped drives to the Windows 7 tossing VM and that is where their data lives. I just use eCS for the nodes to use the Ray Gwinn SIO drivers to make it available via telnet. No native telnet in my old classic version.. lol

I can't remember but, there was a piece of code snippit for 4.24 to allow a fossil driver for telnet. I think I have it somewhere in my archives

    That's very cool.

In an effort to gain more personal experience in QEMU (as I want a good comparison to how that software handles emulation versus other, more 'common' hypervisors) I went and downloaded the FreeDos ISO and will attach it to the mainframe and see what I can do with it.

Right now I am running VirtualBox that manages my server and BBS on the network. I want to incorporate a new system that I built for Proxmox for the rest of the deployment ideas that I had in mind.

    Gods, I really need a man-cave. =)

Yeah, and I seem to remember there was some type of restriction when doing that but I don't recall. Once I started using the SIO drivers decades ago, that was my telnet solution as it works perfectly to emulate serial over telnet. OS/2 was also the best for multitasking DOS, so it was always a good fit for the classic setup.

I was so happy to find that it worked the same in the virtual environment. I remember attempting booting the virtual clone of my physical BBS for the first time and crossing my fingers that the SIO drivers didn't lock up or anything.

attach it to the mainframe and see what I can do with it.

If it wasn't for the fact that I require telnet emulation, running many small DOS VMs with mapped drives would also work for the BBS. Long ago I was going to do that with many old PCs mapped to a Netware server.

Right now I am running VirtualBox that manages my server and BBS on the network. I want to incorporate a new system that I built for Proxmox for
the rest of the deployment ideas that I had in mind.

VirtualBox and VMware Workstation are both nice to use for testing stuff on my main PC. I run a few things that work better in a VM vs my physical PC using that method.

    Gods, I really need a man-cave. =)

I have a small "Network/Server" room which is in an enclosed area under my basement steps. It isn't that large of a space, but large enough to house (2) 4 foot racks and (1) 3 foot rack. My servers are in one, UPS units in the other with some spare servers, and the smaller one has all my network stuff - switches/firewall, a few more UPS units, patch panels, etc.
