• Question for you Windows guys

From Calvusrex #1@144.Wwivnet@11:1/101 to All on Tue Feb 17 11:14:20 2026

How are you guys running WWIV in Windows? Are you hosting it yourself? On a Windows VPS? I am genuinely curious because outside of hosting WWIV on a computer on my home LAN I don't see the cost effectiveness of getting a Windows VPS.

Second questions is, what version of Windows are you using and how do DOSdoors work with the version you are using?

My board is on Debian and getting DOS doors to work has been nigh impossible (tried DOSemu, QEMU, no luck at all) so Im using BBSLink, but would love to host my own instances of LoRD, TW2002,and BRE.

I run a windows 7 VM on my home server. I do run doxbox for some of the doors, older versions of tradewars, etc that won't run on windows bare.

I've never tried setting something up on 'nix before. I might have to give that a try sometime.

Right now I am running WWIV 5.0 on Windows XP using Netfoss as my telnet frontend. All games work pretty well and I've always felt that they run faster with Netfoss vs the Synchfoss option. Right now I have lost the capacity to send out network files when they were changed because Networkb is doesn't seem to be backwards compatible. I also run VADV and Synchronet on a 32 bit Windows 10 machine and I'm playing with that for an updated version of WWIV. Another retirement adventure....

I've been running Windows 10 x86 for about 10 years? Running in a VM on an ESXi hypervisor. However, doe to the estreme cost for power here in CA, am considering moving to a Raspberry Pi and giving up the door games.

Sorry - hit /s too quickly.
The games, for the most part, run pretty good. Althought I do have to clear hung ntvdm sessions weekly or the VM acts up.

What version of DOSemu did you try? You might have better luck with DOSemu 1.4 than the new DOSemu2 line.

I got an instance running in a VM on Windows 7 and I notice everytime I exit LoRD I get that same NTVDM error. Any idea how to stop that? It does it everytime and the game wont reload unless I actually close out the error.
