• WWIV v4.23 INIT

From Patch #1@142.Wwivnet@11:1/101 to All on Tue Feb 18 12:55:48 2025

'Past Patch' was smart and made a complete backup of my original 40Gig (WOW the space on that thing) HD that ran the original LOTW back in the day.

So, I broke out DOSBOX and started that process to run the old BBS once again and take a stroll through the past and better days when I was a lot younger.

When I went to run wwiv /m for no modem detection, the message that I received is that I needed to run INIT to convert the user list firt. Problem is, I can't remember the password that I created for the system.

Is there a way to recover that at all, given that the database wasn't encrypted back then? I want to make my current version look nearly the same as it was back then. Any help is appreciated.

    strings CONFIG.DAT

It'll be the first or 2nd thing listed. there was little to no security back in the day (not that things are all that different now)

If you aren't on linux/mac, just look in a text editor.
