• Files question

From Patch #1@142.Wwivnet@11:1/101 to All on Tue Sep 10 16:24:08 2024

I am working on getting the file areas setup on my BBS, however I've run into a situation that I'm not sure how to solve.

In the conference and directory that I want to upload from, I have some sound bytes that are in .mp3 format.

Is there a way to allow all file extensions to be uploaded, or do they all need to be archived in zip in order for that to happen?

Also noticed that other file areas aren't allowing me to upload, either.

Particularly these are directories that are 'mounted' from my File Server so that I don't have to host them in two separate areas, and the BBS hard drive is limited in size (specifically because I wanted to use the NAS as the file
storage and access for the BBS)

So we have the folder properly mounted inside of Debian OS, validated that by listing the contents of the folder in the /mnt tree.

I have the dir base set as Hard Drive (and have also tried CDRom) allow uploads , allow uploadall, and it points directly to the mounted folder.

Now when I issue //uploadall in that dir definition, I see files wiz by, but it doesn't ask me for file descriptions and adds them to the list to be viewed and downloaded.

I'm starting to think that there is something in WWIVConfig that I didn't setup so that ALL files can be listed regardless of file extension or file size.

    Any takers?!

I remember having this issue to begin with. I haven't played with the file area on my BBS in some time but need to and will next weekend. I belive it has something to do moreso with user:group and file permissions than anything else. I had originally installed WWIV under /opt/wwiv using wwiv:wwiv user:group and I just kept running into issues file permissions as my user:group for my file server was not wwiv:wwiv. I think I got it to work by giving user wwiv permission to the group associated with the file server and vice versa giving my main computer user access to the group wwiv. This seemed to cure the //upload all issue you're describing.

You do not need to archive your .mp3 files. I have .ans files that I mass upload without issue. I'm sure I'll have tons of .pdf's I'll be uploading also.

If this isn't the issue, I look forward to hearing what the resolution is as I move my WWIV build to my new machine and start really building out the final touches before going "live."

I figured what was happening, almost comically.

This version of WWIV still has the filename.ext limitation as it was back in the DOS days. I thouight that with8 the most recent port, that would be one thing that would have been updated as well ... I was wrong =)

Anything that has an extended filename and more than three letters for an extention, will b e skipped.

If I could make the suggestion to the brilliant mind that took over this project: In order to attract more people to try out not only BBS'ing in general but also use updated, quality of life aspects to qwell the frustrations like this, that would be awesome!!

We'd love to have help with re-doing the File Transfer section.

Somewhere I have a renaming.sh script that I use to take an entire directory of files and put them in to a uniform format, such as going from odd spaces, capital letters, !@)$*(&^*)%*&, etc.. and nicely listing them as_file_name.zip or AsFileName.zip removing everything else. I'm sure, in the mean time, it might be able to be modified to cut off after X character count as well. I can upload the instructions for it (lots of options) to your BBS if you think it would be of help.

It's not mine, rather I think it was originally written by Meatlotion of Quantum Wormhole.
