Hey Jimmy Mac, not sure how to do so. I tried following the github link but it's a broken link. My WWIV BBS is not 100% ready, I had to put it on pause for a couple weeks as I built my kiddo's and I's new PC's. But I'd still like to get it posted (it'll motivate me to push harder to get something done ;)

I see! I just went direct to the Git repo and drilled into it to find the correct path:
    https://github.com/wwivbbs/docs/blob/main/docs/misc/bbslist.md

I'm certain that there is a more up-to-date list somewhere, maybe in the WWIVnet repo. Mark? Rob?

I wasn't aware there was a bbslist in the github repo. The regions files are part of the WWIV source repo, which I used to update as new information on area codes was discovered. For some reason I cna no longer update the repo - maybe I should add pull requests for those.

I am not familiar with the bbslist file, however.

Too many area codes are being made due to the increase of mobile devices.
I think for new ones we should just say the region instead of the actual city.

Since area codes don't necessarily reflect where the system is running, that is the other issue. I was using whatever area code and prefix that reflects the BBS home area vs the sysop area code info.

I'd love to see all WWIV BBSes added here, while also on the Wiki, both are outdated. For nostalgic purposes, and to poke the bear of those who need to spin their WWIV'eys back up, maybe keep the originals too. For those who don't .. it might also be a good idea for those running 5.9 developer, maybe add an ANSI welcome.ans at least. When I search the BBS Telnet Guide a) There are a lot of WWIV BBSes not listed, and b) may of them have the basic WWIV ANSI welcome.ans logo.

WWIV Has SO Much to offer. The more I use this the more I love whats been done. I love the new menu editor, while also the uniqueness of WWIVnet, and the nostalgic features such as user customizable colors in defaults. WWIV frankly just kicks butt! I'm loving it. I'd love to see WWIV BBS's to get more calls for sure. So .. if there are instructions on us listing our own BBSes in areas such as on github, please let us know.

Telnet BBS guide *I think* still scans telnet ports .. BUT I also think that it's wise for each sysop to get on there and claim your BBS, then utilize the easy to navigate presonal customization of your BBS listing (for those that don't know but may be reading).

That really is one of the best sources, but what I think would be really beneficial, would be for each node on WWIVnet to have a list of all the telnet addresses for all connected nodes.

Also wondering what it would take for an option or script to reach out and ping the nodes on a regular basis and reprt back with an up/down flag that could be queried or posted.

Yep, I look for WWIV board when I do look for new BBSes to add to the list. But if you run one and I don't list it, by all means let me know! And if I list it and you don't have ownership of your listing - please let me know and I'll link your account on the site to your BBS. :)

Yes, those are both good ideas. Other than trying to determine the region, the phone numbers are almost obsolete at this point. Having the telnet address would be nice to see in the BBSLIST.

In addition, if I knew after 6+ months a system was not accessable, I could then remove them and do some cleanup.

I'm sure that if this was created, I would need to upgrade the NETxx software I'm using over here. Also, NetUp would likely need an update.

It might be easier to keep the telnet list in a separate file, like what was started using binkp.net. We sort of have that already and I have been trying to keep that list updated.

Would you be able to send along that file to us when the network files (bbslist callout etc..) are sent out?

Or am I flaking and not seeing something that already exists..?

Maybe we could figure out a simple script to update our local BBS lists with a single source of truth from the same file, just for the WWIVnet connected BBS's, while keeping a seperate BBS list for all others?

I used to pull a list from Dave's site and post it as a gfile, but never got around to automating it.

You should already have a binkp.net file in your network files directory. It should be getting sent out with the bbslist.x files when I send an update. At least that is what NETUP says it is doing.

Yes, that's there with a FQDN, but not with the BBS ports, just the Binkp ports.

I'm looking for a quick and easy way to provide callers (and ourselves) with a list of FQDN's for their terminal programs.

Are any of us using a standard port for the Telner client? I'm not.

Didn't think about the alternate telnet ports, as I was just thinking about the FQDN, itself.

I must be one of the rare ones using the standard telnet tcp/23 port. :)
