For those who remember Hum from the mid 90s, they were somewhat catagorized as "Shoegaze" "Space Music" or "Grunge". I think they are more Shoegaze in that the genre attributes the name to the penchant of the guitarists to be looking down at their pedals all the time. In other words, the guitars can be quite "ambient" and spacey with walls of distortion. I have been working on a pedalboard myself and there is quite an art to blending reverb, delay, loops and fuzz and make it sound like lush musical landscapes. Anyhow, the band gained quite of following. You can find their appearances on late night TV like Jimmy Kimmel or loads of performances on YouTube. They sort of came to an end yet guitarist Matt Talbot put together a last, valient album called "Inlet" in 2020. This album to me is an enigma in that it sounds like The Beatles morphed into Metallica after Revolver with a dash of Pink Floyd. This album is heavy like Doom metal. It's melodic in it's vocals and lyrics and each song is rich. I originally downloaded it to make a mix CD for my daughter yet it stands on it's own so well I hate to take any of the songs out of context. Not soon after, their drummer Brian St Pierre passed away and, like many bands that lost significant drummers, that was the end. Guitarist Matt Talbot is now the head of music department at Milliken College. I wish they could get it back together but, only time will tell. Talbot has his own recording studio now and maybe working on another epic LP. They did market all their own stuff and insisted on vinyl versions of their material. It's made my summer so far....
