I just wished computers didnt generate so much energy these days. I
would likely need to run my bbs off a server farm.

What makes you say that? BBSes don't take up that many resources. I mean, you can run one off a single board computer or even an old phone with absolutely no lag or anything. Full blown PCs use much less power than they used to, also.

I was going to echo this.. But add that virtualization has come a long way as well.

That being said, being here in CA, we're being raped by PG&E who, since deregulation of the 80's has been focusing solely on the shareholders and not the infrastructure that caused many of the fires here over the past 8 years.
So.. my wife and I ase now averaging over $350/month in electricity bills alone.
All elecrtic home, no gas, so water heater, drier and stove are the big hitters. I haven't placed the Kill-a-watt on the server in a while, but I can't see that using up too much in KWH.

Do you have a heat pump perhaps for both summer and winter. Our electric costs are similar to yours with the exception that we have an oil burner for both heat and hot water. We just installed a mini split system here... one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs to see if we can cut costs. I believe Mark H. has them as well. Perhaps Mark has more than one compressor considering his house is bigger than mine....

I've been running WWIV on the free Oracle Cloud tier server for 4+ years now, works perfectly. Total monthly cost is $0. Can't say enough good thing about Oracle Cloud - when they say free, they mean free unlike AWS.

Nope.. I wish. Our only source of heat is elecrtic baseboards upstairs, and a pellet stove downstairs.
I used to have a fireplace, but it was so inefficient, it did a better job of cooling off the house in the winter than heat it.

Electric baseboard is expensive. Are there any rebates or energy incentives in CA to retrofit heat pumps? Massachesetts gives a good rebate of several thousand dollars. I got a quote for 10k for the installation and the heat pump company worked directly with the state. We took advantage of this in fear that the current administration would do away with it. We also have been replacing windows in the house. We purchase the Anderson windows duing the "tax free" holiday and pay a contractor to install. I do the interior fine trim because they notoriously fuck up their detail work. I have about five more windows to replace in the house but from an energy standpoint, it's well worth it if you are living next to the ocean.

They sure are! I haven't even heard of a heat pump. Will have to look into it. However, this is a condo and not the easiest to do upgrades in.

We did replace the windows about 10 years ago and they made a HUGE improvement!

I believe in Iceland the government subsidised heat pumps to the residents to bring down the energy costs of the country. It works like a refridgerator in that it either extracts cold or heat. Therefore it will heat in the winter or cool in the summer. It is more efficient than typical electric baseboard. We live close to the Gulf stream so actually our weather is more mild. Despite being in New England, I've not seen a decent snow in eight years now.

I have a 5-ton central AC unit for the house, but also have a mini-split just for my home office due to how warm it would get from the southern exposure and my (4) video card PC.

We have natural gas heat, which used to be really cheap until BGE was allowed to raise the distribution charges crazy high! We now pay $20 to ship a $1 pen.
