Yea, it was slightly better than the 80s. but not like today.
I never felt unsafe, perhaps the area I was in was just more accepting - St. Louis, Missouri - but even back then we had Pride events, and I knew plenty of people who were "out".
The one piece of advice I can offer anyone - never be afraid to be you. Don't let anyone (especially some Oligarch nowadays) tell you who you can or can't be. You are perfect just the way you are.
