Back when I was in my early 20s I worked at a Farm/Garden center in Maryland known as Valley View Farms. I was told by my supervisor that I should go get my Class B (now Class C) truck drivers license. I was scheduled to take my test in Aberdeen (Harford Co.) Maryland. It was wintertime so I had time to practice parallel parking and backing up to a dock etc., to get my skills up. The vehicle I would take was a Ford flatbed with a 10 speed (five speed with a high low transaxle). I would have to demonstrate double clutching as well as a circle truck tour of my vehicle to the examiner before I drove around to demonstrate my ability in traffic. The day came when a co-worker, Johnny Hessler would accompany me from Cockeysville to Aberdeen. He had been drinking the night before and forgot he was taking me. He had a hell of a hangover and the truck was empty and bounced up and down on Interstate 95 as I drove East towards Aberdeen. Nonetheless he became sick and barfed out of his window several times before we got there. So I checked in and Johnny went looking for coffee. I got a female Md. State Trooper as my examiner. I walked around the truck and discussed what I would inspect before driving i.e, tires, lights etc. When we got in the truck the first thing she said was, "Damn, it smells like somebody barfed in here!" I kept my mouth shut and did the circle Aberdeen tour, backed into a loading dock without hitting it and then parallel parked. I passed with flying colors. I fondly remember this story because Mr. Johnny Hessler has just announced his retirement with Valley View. Our driving test was just over 50 years ago ;)
