Yesterday my wife and I drove out to Barnstable Village on Cape Cod to enjoy the local 4th of July Parade. Parking is an ordeal so I woke the wife at 6am so she could have her morning coffee and wake up time. We would leave the house about 8 to just travel a few miles and park just outside the village and hike in. Not a big trek, perhaps 10 minutes on foot. Well when we started walking, my wife says that she is still in wake up mode, she needs to have some quiet while getting acclimated and basically implied that I was not to speak :O I respected her AM wishes and after about five minutes she broke the silence and said, "How long are you growing your hair?" I looked at her directly and said something like, "I thought you wanted me to be quiet!" And then I got that "fuck you" look from her. Overall, it was a great parade! Kind of like Mayberry. We were up on a hill on the front lawn of the courthouse, under the shade of a giant tree, overlooking Main St. USA. Everything was perfect!

We typically go to one of the parades in the early morning in Dundalk and then another in Bel Air. Very different parades, but my son loves them, so we go to both.

This year it was just too hot to stay for the entire Bel Air parade. We ended up leaving about around 45 mins. It was just insanely hot - around 100 degrees and 120 heat index at the time. We have been having days over 100 with high humidity for 4 days in a row now.

Fortunatly we had some t-storms yesterday evening to cool it off some.

Fortunately for us, the city I live in holds a jubilee at the community center l iterally three short blocks away. Foods, live music, tons of games and events for the kids, and even a full (limited) bar. I didn't want to go, but Julie talked me into it, amd as soon as the cuntry music sweill started blaring from a radio station booth near the food trucks, I nearly bolted but we were able to escape that assault on our senses and relaxed to a pretty good general 80's rockcover

Fond memories of Bel Air. Used to be one grocery store (Acme) there and none other than the commisary on the Arsenal or Proving Ground. Bel Air businesses would close on Wednesday (town ordinance?). Took my driver's license test there. One neat furniture store "Beshores" where us "hippy kids" could buy musical instruments... guitars and amps, not to mention vinyl records. You were quite hot on the 4th. We got up to 94 so it was somewhat tolerable. Nice to have some rain now...

So my wife and I historically "go dutch" on home improvement projects and other expenditures. We were sweating out the home heating oil prices last week and managed to buy a tankfull before another price hike but still the costs are phenomenal. She's into the stock market and was waffleing between two oil companies to take advantage of pricing. Anyhow, I casually said that something that should be taken care of, as we both are facing a fixed income is that, our boiler is ancient and has potential for failure. I said that new boilers are expensive but they are much more efficient... I told her that I priced a unit and installation and that it was probably our next "project". Well she has Scots / Jewish heritage and this was like foreplay to her. She's scheduled for a contractor to come out this week to give us an estimate. Heck I was thinking like several months so I could accumulate more money but... winter's coming!

I had oil heat growing up and it was always nice and hot. My brother had oil heat in the house he had built about 20 years ago, too.

The other nice warm heat is natural gas, which is what all the homes I have owned had. Anything but a heat pump is good in my book if you want something that heats and won't normally break the bank. Lots of homes around here also have propane.

I'm interested to know the savings. Around 4 years ago when I had to buy a new HVAC system (natural gas + AC), I looked at various AC units and found that while the efficient ones were nice, they were so much more expensive it wasn't worth it.

I decided to go with a larger natural gas furnace and 5-ton AC unit, and then later added my mini-split in my office since that room is a challenge to keep cool.

The best time to investigate those things is well before you have to get a unit (before a failure).

When I was a kid, we lived right on Pulaski Hwy outside of Edgewood. It was pretty rural then; there was a farm across the road from me. Our house was ancient. It had a coal furnace that was converted to natural gas. I remember that if we had a power failure, the pilot light would stay lit and you could open a petcock on the gas pipe and it would heat up. This was awesome in the dead of winter if you had no power... I could go on and on about Harford Co. in the past....

Nice! The neighborhood I grew up in had a few homes that has coal for heat. Out house was build in the 50s I believe and had oil heat, but there were some olders ones that still used coal.

Most I would imagine are using propane or something else at this point in time.

Not sure because no matter what, you get screwed somehow or another when it comes to energy. For instance, I have natural gas heat. There have been times when the actual natural gas has been really cheap - like .40 cents per therm.

That is all great, but then the monopoly power company screws you on the distribution charge and raises that drastically so you end up paying way too much for a cheap resource. It is like paying $200 to mail a $5 item.

I think we need a federal energy infrastructure that all states must allow their citizens to participate in if they wish. Also, all infrastructure for delivery should be owned by the tax payers - not the monopoly energy companies in the states.

Agreed that energy is a necessity. My thoughts are infrastructure owned by the tax payers and all energy producers nationally can sell and compete and sell the power to anyone in the country. This used to work well in MD - until the latest administration killed it off. It also requires the tax payers (not some government regulation group) owning and managing the infrastructure. As we know, most of the "regulators" were previous energy CEO buddies, so they are basically on the same team out for themselves and not the general people.

Hopefully one day we will be able to buy power from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc, as they will have more than enough power using small nuclear reactors in their data centers to offer cheap rates to the public. Anything to get away from this monopolistic structure we have in place now where the people get constantly screwed.

My wife and I started out this way and do still have our own single bank accounts for our own stuff. HOWEVER, big projects like the new air conditioner we needed 4 years ago, and the complete repaneling and upgrades to our electrical and HVAC are just too big for one to shoulder. We take that debt on together and regret all our decsions later. :P

It is a pretty simple capitalism rule. Competition. The more you have, the better deals you get. It works great when the government doesn't get in the way like they did in MD and block people from buying power from other areas. My power costs used to be 1/4 of what they are now when I was buying power from other sources in the US. Now we are back to a monopoly which 100% never works in favor of the population.
