Do you remember growing up in Maryland when vehicle registrations were around $25 per year? At that time it was impossible to consider it being the price it is now. Thanks to the dynamic-duo of Owe'Malley and Wes Moore, both majorly jacked all taxes in MD on everything even after inheriting a tax suplus from Internet company sales taxes.

I just paid $450 for (1) year registration for (2) cars and (1) motorcycle. All have more than doubled just in the past two years. And I no longer classify as a "historic vehicle" on a 20+ year old vehicle - so I pay full price again.

Owe'Malley came up with what I call the "fat tax" where they charge heavier cars more for registration vs small cars. My Charger gets the "fat tax" and my registration is almost $200 per year. And as a bonus, I have to renew my emmissions this month too, another $25 for nothing.

This state is a political disaster run by crooks.

Ouch! In "Taxachusetts" we have an excise tax on cars annually for infrastructure i.e., pot holes, bridges etc. If I remember correctly didn't we pay this tax when we purchased the car in Maryland? Wasn't it a one time tax? Anyhow, I've been here since 2010 now. Still do the emissions thing annually except my wife has an old Volvo that is exempt now. Everyone here drives a beater i.e., old Toyota pickups. Good used cars are a hot commodity. I was just in Los Angeles a week ago and I noticed that everyone was driving a science fiction BMW, Mercedes or Audi. Not to mention they drive like lunatics on Ventura Hwy like nobody is watching.

Correct. Each time you buy new or used, it used to be a 4% excise tax. Moore raised it to 6.5%. When I bought my used truck, that ended up being a $2500 tax, not to mention registration, title, etc..etc..

There is no budget here. Just one giant slush fund for the crooks to steal.

I decided to add the flexible spending account to my benefits this year.
$390 not being taxed on my pay is good.

Flex plans always were useful for me until my last several years of employment. The plans your company outsourses to are in business to take your money. What might happen is that they make it difficult for you to submit a claim with their "algorithms". An example: I had a colonoscopy and that "laxative" protocol you need prior to the proceedure comes from an online pharmacy. I purchased the stuff with a credit card and then submitted my reimbursement claim with documentation to get my $75.00 back and then... nothing.... they ignore it. This is just one example yet I complained about this to HR and they investigated. The Flex Plan company was so bad that my employer dropped them and then contracted with another company the next year. The new plan was not much better. They make it hard for you to file a claim and end up taking money. It can be a scam...

If you can, the HSA is a great option as well. Everyone should be able to contribute to that, but I think you still have to have a high deductible plan to qualify - which is most of them these days.

Yeah, between all the rediculous rules on Flex Plans and then you add the corrupt insurance companies on top of it, everything is a fight.

When I started working in the professional world in the late 80s, insurance was 1000% times better. Far from perfect, but much better than it is today in leaps and bounds. I used to like the HMO plans which had their pros/cons, but at least they covered stuff and wasn't insanely expensive.

Today I have a $10k deductible and pay almost $5k a year for that luxury. Basically the only thing that covers is a major issue in the hospital. Meanwhile I see tons of people not paying anything and getting better healthcare than me, who is paying out the ass.
