What I'm looking for is something to replace my old aging DVR when the
time comes that the cable companies no longer support Cable Cards. I'm using a very ancient Windows Media Center (on Windows 7!) that is
expected to become a paper weight later this year.
I'm on Verizon FIOS and though they have a DVR option, I hear it isn't
that great. I guess I've been spoiled with WMC since like 2012!
I never record anything. I either download it or watch it on demand. I highly recommend the NVidia Shield 4k. I have had them on each TV for many years now and nothing beats them.
You can use them to run all the streaming apps + Jellyfin and play things off a home media server, etc. Anything that is on Android TV.
I used to use exactly what you have now. Windows Media Center and XBMC on PCs attached to TVs. All was replaced about 5 or so years ago with the NVidia Shields.
