Big storm hitting us here today. Will be in the "washing machine" allI want to move to the east coast, But I don't want severe floods either.
day long and into the night. Looks like the convergence of three fronts? Anyhow, got my firewood in the basement, storm lights, water and cat
food. Hopefully the power won't fail but that's no unusual. Maybe one
day, if I win the lotto, I can get a natural gas powered generator :O
To be continued.....
I want to move to the east coast, But I don't want severe floods either.Well it's tapering off and we got some much needed rain. No loss of power and no real flooding. For Cape Cod it was "a wash".... no pun intended.
Best of luck with the storm - hope you managed to keep the lights on.It's over already! The benefit is the rain which has been much needed as of late. It was a three day rain event. Cape Cod pokes out to the Gulf Stream and tends to be milder. I've not seen a good snow in about eight years now. I don't really mind snow. It's an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the scenery
We really don't get that kind of weather over here in the UK, but we grumble about it being quite wet and miserable, never really hot or
snowy.

I remember pulling off I-95 there once to get gas, got out of my car tosame as in oregon.
pump the gas and you would have thought I was about to shoot someone.
They came out of the store yelling "you can't do that". I thought it
was a joke and had no idea that was actually a law.

It is probably a fantastic state if you are in the mafia.

I just want an affordable state where i can get a 2 bedroom house forWest Virginia?
under 175k, I'll put 50k for home repairs and refurbishments and 75k for property taxes and stuff.

It really boils down to the climate and area you like the best as well.I actually like Cape Cod and it's probably cheaper than Montgomery Co. in Maryland yet, it's like being in Ocean City during the summer. My town, West Barnstable is like Mayberry in the off season. Like Maryland, everyone seems to have a boat and likes to fish (well not everybody). Climate is milder since we poke out to the Gulf stream a bit. Now a lot of my friends and family in Maryland have retired to Deleware due to the lack of state taxes courtesy of Dupont. I'm sure there are other drawbacks. Lewis De is nice as you can be close to the water.
I really like Maryland for the climate, seasons, etc. It has a bit of everything and I have lived here my entire life. I'm not a fan of the
taxes or most of the political policies, but that aside, I like the
state. The good for me outweighs the bad. No matter what I'm sure
every location has their positives and negatives.

Same with New York. I have been to places in New York that if I wasI have a cousin near Bethel NY and he says that it's impossible for him to retire due to the high property taxes. It's nice but deceiving.
dropped in by parachute, I wouldn't have a clue it was New York. The
rural areas are awesome.

I have never been to Cape Cod, but it sounds like a really awesomeI've not had a decent snow since 2016. I used to commute off cape and make nursing visits in New Bedford and Fairhaven. I did that for 8 years which was a bitch. My favorite car was a 2015 Ford Taurus with AWD and weighed two tons. It was black and I "murdered out" the chrome so people thought it was a police interceptor :O Plowed through all kinds of snow with that car...

Cape May is very awesome! I have been there and really like the huge
old victorian homes. Not so much having to pay to go on the beach, but
it might have been only for out of state people. I don't remember,
which isn't a totally bad idea.

Once I'm retired, I'll have more free time to figure all that out,When I finally got a decent paying f/t job I went to England three years in a row.
relax, and enjoy life like I'm a young kid again. :)

Meade moved their electronic warfare installation there. He lived in Sierra Vista in Southern Az and he took me backpacking all over. My favorite trip however was to drive up through Tucson, Phoenix, Sedona and then the Grand Canyon. Canyon always blows me away. I have been 3 times and intend to take my New England wife there. Find a place to stay and do day trips for a couple of weeks. You will never regret it. My youngest daughter is in Montana. That would be my next destination.

When it comes to pizza, I like the thin crust and on the crunchy side.
The ones places I have really visited have been on the east coast. The farthest west I have been was Ohio back in my 20s for work.

Have you ever been 'glamping'? There's a place near the Grand Canyon that has some huge tents you can sleep in that have hard wood floors, a regular size bed, a wood stove heater, a shower, and a toilet (all in the tent). It's not super cheap, but it's a pretty cool experience.
It's been 15 years since I have been to the East coast, but last we were there, we hit all coastal states from Connecticut to Maine. Had a very
nice time! Really miss eating Lobster at the Crab Shack in Maine while in Tee's in the rain. On the Pizza rant, the last time I had Pizza on the
east coast was from a General Store somewhere near Corporation Beach on
the Cape. Pretty sure we were asked to go there so we could feed the
entire family as the pizza was about 3' square!

I'm sure both would be excellent destinations to visit. My target retirement year is just a tad over 3 years away. On the home stretch.
I have visited beaches from New Jersey all the way down to Florida. All different type of experiences. North Carolina still has the "small town feel" on many of their beaches. Not overly populated like the ones here
in MD.
Btw there's a really cool (although not cheap) glamping spot not too far south of the Canyon. Totally recommend. Don't remember the name, though. When my first wife and I were driving up, we planned to stay overnight in Sedonia. We asked some locals where would be a good place to stay. They recommended this little motel on the top of the mesa where the airport was. Now the airport was tiny, mostly for small planes. There was a spiral road up around the mesa to the top and, much to our delight, the motel was small cabins built by this eccentric guy who created a big Japanese garden around the cabins with a little babbling brook, moss lawn and dwarfed pines. It was stunning and half the price of a commercial place like a Holiday. We walked on the dirt road at night to the tavern next to the airfield for dinner which was chili.... just right!

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. You are an avid investor so I know you are planning. I have saved my big account for RMD at age 73. I'm minimally drawing from two accounts already for a monthly income. I could buy a car if I want but I can get 10 - 15 years out of my newish Subaru Forester.

My favorite thing to do at the Grand Canyon, especially when other
people are around in the lookout spot I'm at: Walk up to the edge with
hands on my hips and say "Eh, I've seen grander."

I lived in prescott briefly in the late 90s, and lived at 2 different communes outside flagstaff. beautiful area with the lava flows and
sunset crater and all that. the monsoon season is fantastic, and the dry season was great for skating all the paved ditches and sections of dry
wash. had some good times there but very much prefer the PNW coast.
So, Montana is a pretty spectacular location as well. Have been there a
few times now as well. Several pretty awesome parks to visit! As you
know, my Son settled in Corvallis, which is about an hour south of Missoula, or .. just down the road from your daughter! Just 20 minutes up the Bitterroot from the filming location for "Yellowstone"
You're like me. I have visited nearly every beach from the Mexican border (and some below) all the way up to Northern Vancouver, including parts of Vancouver Island. Nost of those were on various road trips. I tell ya, there's something amazing about the coastal drama from Northern CA
through the PNW. The beashes in Oregon are some serious sand buggy play lands!

So.. That big overlook parking lot on the rigt just before you turn into the residential area there? It's like $10 just to take in the views...Yet driving in, the pull off areas are free. They don't want you blocking traffic to take your pictures.
Absolutely beautiful area. My pipe dream would be building an "AI training/crypto mining" ranch out there. It would be a discrete tech/compute location out in the middle of nowhere.Hahahaha! Somebody's got to do it!
My idea of tending to the ranch would be updating systems and adding automation and deep learning models.

The income being what you need per month to live decently. Also, having zero debt is a must in my book in retirement. I know some people willMy wife bought the house before I moved here and it was a good price. We are diligently paying much more than the payment to pay it off. Meanwhile, since it's Cape Cod and there isn't any new property, it's doubled in value. Perhaps the best investment. What's disconcerting is the amount of properties that are being purchased by big corporations and being flipped into rentals which disenfranchises people from buying a home. This is Boston's "Ocean City".
say why pay off a mortgage that is 1.75%, but I hate debt. I want zero debt, zero principle decline, and passive income to keep things stable
and never worry about it again. I didn't start working at age 11 to
have it any other way.
Yeah, I have heard wonderful things about the Outer Banks in NC. Unfortunately I have never been there as of yet, but been to AtlanticMy mom started taking me to OC in the early 60s when it was like 7 streets of boardwalk. She was such a "sun worshiper" that I might get skin cancer some day. Anyhow, I miss the classic OC. Might have to make a pilgrimage. I usually go to Assateague to get away from the rhetoric.
Beach, NC. That is a really nice small town type of beach. It reminded
me a bit of Ocean City, MD back when I was a young kid before they build
it up to be a city where it isn't that family friendly anymore.

Do you live in the PNW?? My bride used to lice in Forks, Poulsbo (sp),
and Olympia among other areas, and we have been sort of looking around
the area of McMinnville Or. as potential retirement places as well.

I remember spending the night in Savannah, Georgia back in my 20s with
my first wife on a trip to Florida to visit my Dad. The Spanish Moss on
the Oak trees was incredible - something I have never seen anywhere
else. It was an awesome old classic town that I wish I had more time to check out.
yup, live in Anacortes. Used to live in Bremerton so went to Poulsbo
pretty often as the central amrket there has the best japanese grocery selection in the area, or did back in the 00's-10s. Spent a ton of time
in Forks, too, as we planned to mvoe there and spent way too much time
and gas checking out homes and properties. Even had a storage unit full
of stuff there for a couple years because it was ridiculously cheap.
I've had friends that lived in olympiz but it wasn't really my scene, I lived in seattle for a long time and was also a squatter punk there in
the mid and late 90s so was all over the place. I was an army brat as a
kid so moving around is very much in my nature.

Was the place called Sky Ranch Lodge? I'm trying to find it on the map.Sounds right. It's been years ago but, there isn't room for much else on top of that mesa :O Oh and the view of the valley at night is awesome with the town below and the stars above, not to mention all the monument mountains.
