Big storm hitting us here today. Will be in the "washing machine" all day long and into the night. Looks like the convergence of three fronts? Anyhow, got my firewood in the basement, storm lights, water and cat food. Hopefully the power won't fail but that's no unusual. Maybe one day, if I win the lotto, I can get a natural gas powered generator :O

    To be continued.....

    Hi, Jahmas.

Best of luck with the storm - hope you managed to keep the lights on.

We really don't get that kind of weather over here in the UK, but we grumble about it being quite wet and miserable, never really hot or snowy.

Well it's tapering off and we got some much needed rain. No loss of power and no real flooding. For Cape Cod it was "a wash".... no pun intended.

It's over already! The benefit is the rain which has been much needed as of late. It was a three day rain event. Cape Cod pokes out to the Gulf Stream and tends to be milder. I've not seen a good snow in about eight years now. I don't really mind snow. It's an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the scenery

My take on New Jersey has a heavy mafia influenced state where you can't even pump your own gas. It is illegal to do so. Completely insane.

I remember pulling off I-95 there once to get gas, got out of my car to pump the gas and you would have thought I was about to shoot someone. They came out of the store yelling "you can't do that". I thought it was a joke and had no idea that was actually a law.

It is probably a fantastic state if you are in the mafia.

Cape May is very awesome! I have been there and really like the huge old victorian homes. Not so much having to pay to go on the beach, but it might have been only for out of state people. I don't remember, which isn't a totally bad idea.

I'm sure there are areas in North Carolina that would work. Pretty much the majority of northeast states have super high property taxes and high taxes in general.

It really boils down to the climate and area you like the best as well. I really like Maryland for the climate, seasons, etc. It has a bit of everything and I have lived here my entire life. I'm not a fan of the taxes or most of the political policies, but that aside, I like the state. The good for me outweighs the bad. No matter what I'm sure every location has their positives and negatives.

I actually like Cape Cod and it's probably cheaper than Montgomery Co. in Maryland yet, it's like being in Ocean City during the summer. My town, West Barnstable is like Mayberry in the off season. Like Maryland, everyone seems to have a boat and likes to fish (well not everybody). Climate is milder since we poke out to the Gulf stream a bit. Now a lot of my friends and family in Maryland have retired to Deleware due to the lack of state taxes courtesy of Dupont. I'm sure there are other drawbacks. Lewis De is nice as you can be close to the water.

I have never been to Cape Cod, but it sounds like a really awesome place. Especially the big snows that happen now and then.

The farthest up the east coast I have been was Connecticut to see my step son's graduation from the Navy. It is really nice from a climate standpoint. The price of everything seemed to be almost double what I was used to when I was up there - but things are relative.

Yes, lots of people I know who have retired around here have moved from Maryland to Delaware. Far less taxes and the prices are a bit lower for the most part - at least for the time being. I can see why people like Delaware and I think it is nice as well.

I never say never, but I have no intention of moving. Even though where I live has seen significant growth over the past 20 or so years, that pretty much is the same as everywhere else minus Alaska.

We just had an inground pool put in this past spring/summer, so my vacation place is now the backyard.

Yes, one of the guys on my team used to live in New York years ago. The property taxes are insane. People end up losing their home even if it's paid off due to not being able to afford the crazy property taxes. It is really sad, especially for those on a fixed retirement income.

I've not had a decent snow since 2016. I used to commute off cape and make nursing visits in New Bedford and Fairhaven. I did that for 8 years which was a bitch. My favorite car was a 2015 Ford Taurus with AWD and weighed two tons. It was black and I "murdered out" the chrome so people thought it was a police interceptor :O Plowed through all kinds of snow with that car...

It has been a while since we had a good snow here, too. I still remember thge double blizzard year about 13 or so years ago. That was the best!

I really hope we get some decent snow this winter now that I have a 2022 Ram 1500 Laramie - and I really want to go to the Poconos and go snowmobiling.

I have never been one that did much traveling - mainly because I'm always too busy working. It is also a bit challenging because we would have to make arrangements for someone to take care of our son unless we took him with us.

Arizona is kewl! My dad retired from military in '61 and his last gig was Ft. Yuachuca when Ft. Meade moved their electronic warfare installation there. He lived in Sierra Vista in Southern Az and he took me backpacking all over. My favorite trip however was to drive up through Tucson, Phoenix, Sedona and then the Grand Canyon. Canyon always blows me away. I have been 3 times and intend to take my New England wife there. Find a place to stay and do day trips for a couple of weeks. You will never regret it. My youngest daughter is in Montana. That would be my next destination.

Have you ever been 'glamping'? There's a place near the Grand Canyon that has some huge tents you can sleep in that have hard wood floors, a regular size bed, a wood stove heater, a shower, and a toilet (all in the tent). It's not super cheap, but it's a pretty cool experience.

I'm a more traditional Sicilian Pizza fan. Where I grew up, there were two brothers who opened a small 'hole-in-the-wall' pizza shop called Lococo's. I wan to sat they opened in maybe 1971? For me, their Vesuvio (add mushrooms) is the best Pizza one can ask for.

Now, I'll admit, I haven't been to more than maybe 200 other Pizza places over the years, so I have to plead ignorant to the exotics, but their dough is the best. Nice and thin except for around the edge where there is a very nice rise for an airy edge. Every person I have taken there have also agreed 'one of the best'

When it comes to pizza, I like the thin crust and on the crunchy side.

The ones places I have really visited have been on the east coast. The farthest west I have been was Ohio back in my 20s for work.

It's been 15 years since I have been to the East coast, but last we were there, we hit all coastal states from Connecticut to Maine. Had a very nice time! Really miss eating Lobster at the Crab Shack in Maine while in Tee's in the rain. On the Pizza rant, the last time I had Pizza on the east coast was from a General Store somewhere near Corporation Beach on the Cape. Pretty sure we were asked to go there so we could feed the entire family as the pizza was about 3' square!

blows me away. I have been 3 times and intend to take my New England
wife there. Find a place to stay and do day trips for a couple of weeks.

My favorite thing to do at the Grand Canyon, especially when other people are around in the lookout spot I'm at: Walk up to the edge with hands on my hips and say "Eh, I've seen grander."

Btw there's a really cool (although not cheap) glamping spot not too far south of the Canyon. Totally recommend. Don't remember the name, though. Big bed with wood-fire stove, shower, and toilet, all in the tent :).

Have you ever been 'glamping'? There's a place near the Grand Canyon that has some huge tents you can sleep in that have hard wood floors, a regular size bed, a wood stove heater, a shower, and a toilet (all in the tent). It's not super cheap, but it's a pretty cool experience.

No, never heard of that term before. While I like the outdoors a good deal, my idea of camping is staying in a nice warm bed somewhere indoors. :)

Arizona is kewl! My dad retired from military in '61 and his last gig
was Ft. Yuachuca when Ft. Meade moved their electronic warfare
installation there. He lived in Sierra Vista in Southern Az and he took
me backpacking all over. My favorite trip however was to drive up
through Tucson, Phoenix, Sedona and then the Grand Canyon. Canyon always blows me away. I have been 3 times and intend to take my New England

    So true..

Julie and I have visited AZ a few times now. One trip was to the GC via Williams from the South, then Flagstaff, Paige (Antelope Canyon) and then down the east side to Canyon De Chelly, and then down to the Gila Monument oin Silver City NM. Other trips took us to Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome, Prescott and eventually down to Phoenix and Scottsdale. Of those, we're most likely to return to Prescott, possibly to retire. Time will tell!

So, Montana is a pretty spectacular location as well. Have been there a few times now as well. Several pretty awesome parks to visit!
As you know, my Son settled in Corvallis, which is about an hour south of Missoula, or .. just down the road from your daughter!
Just 20 minutes up the Bitterroot from the filming location for "Yellowstone"

Again, a beautiful place, but one of my previous visits was last winter. Not so fond of the cold or snow. April was amazing for the wedding.

Our next trip it seems may be to head back down to Newcastle NSW. Not looking forward to the 13+ hour flight but we'll nake the best of our time there.

They recommended this little motel on the top of the mesa where the airport was. Now the airport was tiny, mostly for small planes. There was a spiral road up around the mesa to the top and, much to our delight, the motel was small cabins built by this eccentric guy who created a big Japanese garden around the cabins with a little babbling brook, moss lawn and dwarfed pines. It was stunning and half the price of a commercial place like a Holiday. We walked on the dirt road at night to the tavern next to the airfield for dinner which was chili.... just right!

The northern beaches in the east get pretty cold in the winter, as Jahmas can attest. All the areas are different in their own way.

I remember spending the night in Savannah, Georgia back in my 20s with my first wife on a trip to Florida to visit my Dad. The Spanish Moss on the Oak trees was incredible - something I have never seen anywhere else. It was an awesome old classic town that I wish I had more time to check out.

My first time to Florida, my big take away was how flat it is. I'm used to hills, valleys, all over the place. Florida is flat as a pancake for the most part. Very different from what I am used to.

Overall, I like the small town, classic feel, with wide open spaces as well. Those are my favorite places to visit.

No doubt, lots of buckets. My plan is to never draw down the principal, but to have the multiple buckets of principal generate enough passive income per month to live decently. You figure out what that number is, then figure out how to make that much passive income per month with little risk and no real drawdown. I hate seeing things go backwards, so that is just how I have always planned on doing it.

My retirement plan is - good economy, 80% income, 20% growth. Bad economy, 90-95% income, 5-10% growth.

The income being what you need per month to live decently. Also, having zero debt is a must in my book in retirement. I know some people will say why pay off a mortgage that is 1.75%, but I hate debt. I want zero debt, zero principle decline, and passive income to keep things stable and never worry about it again. I didn't start working at age 11 to have it any other way.

My wife bought the house before I moved here and it was a good price. We are diligently paying much more than the payment to pay it off. Meanwhile, since it's Cape Cod and there isn't any new property, it's doubled in value. Perhaps the best investment. What's disconcerting is the amount of properties that are being purchased by big corporations and being flipped into rentals which disenfranchises people from buying a home. This is Boston's "Ocean City".

My mom started taking me to OC in the early 60s when it was like 7 streets of boardwalk. She was such a "sun worshiper" that I might get skin cancer some day. Anyhow, I miss the classic OC. Might have to make a pilgrimage. I usually go to Assateague to get away from the rhetoric.

Do you live in the PNW?? My bride used to lice in Forks, Poulsbo (sp),
and Olympia among other areas, and we have been sort of looking around
the area of McMinnville Or. as potential retirement places as well.

yup, live in Anacortes. Used to live in Bremerton so went to Poulsbo pretty often as the central amrket there has the best japanese grocery selection in the area, or did back in the 00's-10s. Spent a ton of time in Forks, too, as we planned to mvoe there and spent way too much time and gas checking out homes and properties. Even had a storage unit full of stuff there for a couple years because it was ridiculously cheap. I've had friends that lived in olympiz but it wasn't really my scene, I lived in seattle for a long time and was also a squatter punk there in the mid and late 90s so was all over the place. I was an army brat as a kid so moving around is very much in my nature.

I lived in Olympia from 1973 to 1982. My older brother still lives in Tacoma.

I last toured Washington state in 2005 (and some of Orergon as well). Maybe I'll get back there again after I retire in a year or two.

I remember spending the night in Savannah, Georgia back in my 20s with
my first wife on a trip to Florida to visit my Dad. The Spanish Moss on
the Oak trees was incredible - something I have never seen anywhere
else. It was an awesome old classic town that I wish I had more time to check out.

That's something we noticed in Louisiana last month. The Usnea was amazing! It grows here as well, but nowhere near the density or size.

Nice.. I know that Julie would move back to WWA in a heartbeat if I could handle the winter weather. I was planning on heading up there for New Years but doe to a family member with serious medical issues, we're heading south instead.

My wife bought the house before I moved here and it was a good price. We
are diligently paying much more than the payment to pay it off. Meanwhile, since it's Cape Cod and there isn't any new property, it's doubled in
value. Perhaps the best investment. What's disconcerting is the amount of properties that are being purchased by big corporations and being flipped into rentals which disenfranchises people from buying a home. This is Boston's "Ocean City".

Yes, the "investment properties", especially the ones run from other countries are a major issue. The AirBNBs are totally killing the ability for regular people to purchase properties. All you see these days are rentals since many can't even afford to buy anything.

My great Aunt and Uncle had a place on 43rd street. It was a nice old cottage that my Mom would rent for one week each summer back when I was a young kid.

I wasn't much for vacations, but I do have nice memories from those days. It was way less populated and a nice family spot. I believe whomever inherited the cottage on that side of my family must have sold it because I don't recongnize the names of the current owners. I'm sure they made a small fortune on that investment, but the area is not anywhere close to as nice as it was back then.

They recommended this little motel on the top of the mesa where the
airport was. Now the airport was tiny, mostly for small planes. There

Sounds right. It's been years ago but, there isn't room for much else on top of that mesa :O Oh and the view of the valley at night is awesome with the town below and the stars above, not to mention all the monument mountains.
