• Guidance on new phone please?

I have a Motorola G8(power) which is coming up 5 years old and 2/3/4G
only and loosing battery life. So I thought I'd have a look at what the
    5G market has to offer.

    My current shortlist is:-
    Motorola G56
    Motorola G86
    Motorola Edge 60
    Samsung A56
    Xiamoi Poco F7

Where it is an option I would go for 12GbRAM and 512GbROM, but if the
phone still has a memory card slot then 8/256 might be viable. Ideally I
would like one wifi calling, and eSIM as well as SIM card for future
    proofing.

Usage is usual browsing, emails, WhatsApp, plus plenty of technical apps
and a softphone app. I do on rare occasions also watch footy on it if my tablet is not close to hand! Oh, and phone calls of course.

If anyone has hard experience of any of these units and is happy to
share it I would be very grateful.

A family member has had a Motorola Edge 50 Neo for a bit over a year.
This may be similar to the Edge 60 that you list. It seems a good phone
for the price with relatively little bloatware. But as it's been on the market for a year or two there are probably newer models that make more
    sense.

I found a good website for detailed technical specs and some useful
reviews was gsmarena.com Besides bloatware one of the main differences between brands (and sometimes models) is the policy on software updates:
i.e. for how many years do you get them.

Thanks for that Clive. gsmarena.com is indeed a useful site but you have
to remember one main thing - it is a Merkin site and so any parameters
quoted are for Merkin market products.

I bought a phone - can't remember what, might have been a Huawei before
The Donald blocked Google from selling Android to them - which said that
it had Corning Gorilla Glass 3 as standard. Indeed it does in the US and
IMSMC in the EU as well, but the UK/RoI market got ordinary strengthened
glass with a stick-on film to stop it getting scratched. There were
three parameters in all like this - can't remember the others.

I would be quite happy to buy an Honor phone now they are not affected
by the blocking of their former Huawei parent but they are still using
their version of Android which I believe is not friendly, and they no
longer support additional memory by use of a microSD card which could be
a nuisance given the way I use my phone.

At the moment the Poco F7 and the G56 or G86 are leading contenders.

I'm a bit in the same boat.

My family and I have used Moto phones for 10+ years, in part because
of the twin sim availability, separate SD card, budget price and
minimum bloatware. My G6+ is stuck on Android 9 and like you battery
life is limited to the point where I carry a battery bank around
    regularly.

Latest offering seem to have ditched the headphone jack and FM radio
both of which I have found useful.

My wife is on the G23 which is much better all round than my G6+ but
that is now a couple of years old.

I'm not sure that I'd pay extra for 5G as I neither need to speed it
purports to offer (I believe it is still somewhat underwhelming) nor
do i think it will have the coverage/rollout to make it worthwhile
    over 4G.

Very true. This is especially the case for Moto models. The models and
specs are *very* different in the US compared to UK/EU.

I bought a phone - can't remember what, might have been a Huawei before
The Donald blocked Google from selling Android to them - which said that

I would look carefully at the EU energy efficiency ratings if battery life matters to you. I've been doing some analysis - which I'll publish soon -
which shows that the difference between ratings is about 15%. i.e. for
similar sized batteries a B-rated phone is worse than an A-rated one by an
    hour per 1,000 mAh.
