• Update to iOS 26?

This is probably topical for many contributors to the group.

Apple is offering iPhone users an update to iOS 26, claimed to be 'a
new design, intelligent experiences and improvements to the apps you
rely on every day'. I assume this is optional as it is described as
'also available' and iOS 18 is up to date.

Has anyone tried it? Is it worth having or just a lot of AI nonsense?
Why iOS 26? What happened to all the numbers in between?

I assume you can defer/refuse the upgrade but it is the next sequential version of iOS so why would you?

    Has anyone tried it?

Only on an iPad, where the main differences I see (outside of
aesthetics) are to the multi-tasking functionality.

Is it worth having or just a lot of AI nonsense?

I have an iPad A16 which doesn't support Apple Intelligence so I can't
vouch for any of the AI stuff. A summary of what the update entails is detailed here - https://www.apple.com/uk/newsroom/2025/09/new-versions-of-apples-software-platforms-are-available-today/

Devices that support Apple Intelligence - https://www.apple.com/uk/apple-intelligence/#:~:text=Apple%20Intelligence%20is%20compatible%20with%20these%20devices.

Why iOS 26? What happened to all the numbers in between?

They changed the version numbering so it's aligned across all of their platforms (and presumably the year of mainstream adoption - 2026) https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/wwdc-2025-live-updates-from-apples-keynote-including-new-ios-ipados-apple-intelligence-and-more-141640595.html

Correct. It'll always be optional but 18 will stop being supported soon.

    Has anyone tried it?

I normally wait for the x.1 version of major releases.

If you have a recent enough phone you'll already have it. If not, then io26 won't be any different.

Why iOS 26? What happened to all the numbers in between?

It's now related to the following year of release so iOS (20)26.

Thanks. This explains the situation helpfully. I think I'll do the
same. Since iOS 18 is still supported, there is nothing to lose.
