• Looking for basic, low data SIM only deal with EU roaming

    From Chris Green@cl@isbd.net to uk.telecom.mobile on Thu Sep 25 09:14:47 2025
    From Newsgroup: uk.telecom.mobile

I've used idMobile PAYGO for quite a while but I'm just beginning to
think a minimum monthly deal might actually be better.

I use very little data on my 'phone so just a couple of Gb per month
    is fine.

The problem with the idMobile PAYGO deal is that when I go to France
(which I do several times a year) I need to buy a 'plan' to get
reasonably priced roaming which is OK I guess but it's just hassle
that I could do without (and I sometimed forget!). It also costs -u6
each time I do it which, by the time I've gone to France five or six
times adds up to almost the same as a monthly deal.

idMobile's -u6/month deal is reasonable but there are cheaper ones like
Spusu's -u4.90/month one, are there any other ones to consider and what
is support like? idMobile's support is generally OK though their web
site is a bit quirky, I wouldn't want to move to anywhere with poorer
    support really.

Spusu works for me. Not really had much need to contact support, other than
the initial setup. That relies on sending a text message, which an iPad
canrCOt manage. Quick phone call solved that.
Spusu passes my European test in as much as it includes Switzerland, which
    many donrCOt.

Ah, thank you, I'd been wondering about Spusu.

The Spusu 1Gb/month deal would seem to suit me pretty well and is only -u2.90/month which is a lot cheaper than anything else I can find so
I'll maybe try that and see how it goes.

Having said that I have a couple of questions:-

How can I check WiFi calling compatibility of my 'phone (tablet actually)?

How can I check VoLTE compatibility?

Specifically with Spusu I mean as it appears that both WiFi calling
and VoLTE vary between providers and phones.

I've been with Lebara for years and have been perfectly happy. I pay
-u4.90 per month for 5GB of data (far more than I need) unlimited texts
and UK minutes, 100 minutes of international calls to a lot of
countries, roaming in EU and a host of other countries. This was a deal
set up by Money Saving Expert, and there probably isn't a direct
equivalent but there are similar ones. I see that Money Supermarket is
doing some deals at the moment: https://www.moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/sim-only/networks/lebara/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=21351113670&utm_id=21351113670&utm_term=lebara%20sim%20only%20contract&gclsrc=aw.ds&source=GOO-0X0000048C2DEA476C&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21351113670&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhaXViOnzjwMV645QBh0h_RDwEAAYAiAAEgJRA_D_BwE

Try ringing Spusu. They are very helpful and will know the answers to
    your questions.

They are an Austrian company and since Austria and Switzerland share
many services/facilities that would explain why CH is included.*

If your tablet has wifi dialling, if you insert a SIM for a SP that
provides such then when you go into the dialler, press the three blob
settings access top right and you will see wifi dialling presented -
which it is not if your SP does not use wi-fi dialling. Note however
some oddities. For example my Moto G8(pwr) does support wi-fi dialling
but not on GiffGaff who claim that they are awaiting a software update!

EE supports VoLTE under the name 4G Calling so it would not be daft to
    pose the question to Spusu.

Final thought: have you considered either using What's App for calls at
least to the UK? Equally, why not get a VoIP service and number and use
a VoIP app on your tablet?

Yes, nearly all reviewers say they're very helpful, I'll call them.

    True. :-)

When in France my WiFi/Internet is behind a CGNAT connection so VOIP
    can be difficult.

    Thanks.

My phone has the standard Google phone app.

There isn't a 'vertical ellipsis' menu, instead it has a hamburger menu,
    under which I have
Settings, Calling accounts, [O2], WiFi Calling
    with options to enable/disable
and if enabled, whether to prefer WiFi or prefer mobile network.

I'm with IDmobile as well and am very happy with the service.

An alternative could be Smarty which on the lowest tariffs gives you money
    back for unused data.

    u5,95 a month thereafter. That's for 10GB of data.
