Just a bit of information that might interest some. Currently just had Open Reach fibre installed. Our property is in an off street courtyard, ie no
street frontage other than an alley way. We share our courtyard with two
other houses that do have a street frontage. The nearest pole apparently doesnrCOt not have a fibre feed. They have strung an overhead cable from another pole to the street frontage of our group of houses. That cable is
at least 75 metres. It contains multiple fibres. Once the gets to the
property front it continues down to the alley door and then along the alley
to our courtyard. There they have installed an external junction box, ie
inside our outdoor enclosed courtyard. From that junction box we have individual cables to each of the three properties. Back at the pole the
cable is terminated at another junction box. From that a multi core cable
runs down the pole and then underground. At that point every house is still
on an individual fibre. Somewhere in the street is an underground chamber
where the fibres all come together to an optical splitter. Apparently the splitters are not pole mounted because it is too difficult to work up
there. Elsewhere IrCOve seen OR working on the underground splitters. They remove the cover and then pull on something and the whole assembly rises
out of the ground so they can work on the cabling at above ground level.
A side note to those that have had difficulty getting fibre. Apparently
they are short of installation technicians, so in the early phase of an
area roll out they bin off anything that looks time consuming. Once things settle down they will start to reconsider the more difficult properties.
The technician doing my install has travelled 40 miles from his base. Mind
you, herCOs good, and discusses his plans and is very clear about where he needs to drill before doing so.
