• Voip baby steps

So I've signed up with Voipfone for an account with a local phone number to
get familiar before migrating the landline.

I've downloaded the voipfone app on my ipad and now what? I've tried
calling the number and it just sends me to voicemail.

The app is for managing the account - things like call divert ...

You need an IP phone of some sort. Google for

    IP phone on iPad

... where you will find out how to make your iPhone into an IP phone

    Or see:

    <https://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2013/05/08/make-your-ipad-voip-ready-in-minutes/>

Voipfone are very helpful. If you get stuck, do ring them ...

Beware that migrating the landline can break the phone service for a
week, except in very specific circumstances. If the landline supports
your broadband connection (i.e. ADSL or VDSL) then porting the landline
can break the broadband service. Ask here for more details if this
    affects you.

No, the app is for making and receiving calls. This is probably
something to do with the ipad notifications.

Try making a call with the app and see if that direction works.

There are some issues on iOS with receiving calls when the device is asleep
    - Apple's powersaving means the phone drops connections while it is
sleeping, and they expect it to be woken via a push message from Apple when there is an incoming call. As it's Voipfone's own app I expect they have
set up their server to handle this, but it's a reason why generic SIP apps
have problems on iOS, unless they provide their own server to generate the
push messages. You can test this by calling the number with the
Voipfone app running on the iPad's screen which is on - then there are no powersaving issues.

Not necessarily. You have at least three options:

    1. an VoIP 'phone.
    2. An ordinary 'phone, plugged into an adapter (ATA), plugged into your
    router.
    3. a software VoIP 'phone. Most (all AFAIK) have one freely downloadable
from their website; a common one I've seen has a name beginning with Z.
This is separate from any interface for _controlling_ your VoIP account
    - though I thought those were just web-based.

(Option 2 can be complicated if your "router" has the ATA built in, _and
there is driver for it_; [some] PlusNet routers have the ATA hardware
    but it is not usable.)

I suspect you _have_ downloaded VoIP app. (which makes your PC usable
muck like a Skype/Zoom/whatever call, though audio only) [my option 3],
but haven't configured it correctly. As others have said, try making an _outgoing_ call with it - does it look like something that can do that?

I certainly got that impression, when I put feelers out to them a while
back. (I haven't gone VoIP yet.)

Useful to know, thanks. "Here" now includes the VoIP 'group, as I've
    added it.

Linphone has an option to send "keep alive" messages. It might be worth
trying that. I don't think there is such an option in 'Softphone' which
    is Voipfone's app.

Tells me I'm not authorised. Will contact Voipfone probably something I
need to do in my account, but the number of settings is pretty daunting for
    a newbie.
