• Logging into Zyxel router (to configure it) from Firefox - password not saved correctly

    From NY@me@privacy.invalid to uk.telecom.broadband on Thu Sep 3 10:10:55 2026

Has anyone had problems getting Firefox to remember and replay the admin password for a Zyxel router?

I've got an entry in Firefox's "Saved Logins" list which contains the full password, but when I browse to the router's IP and get the logon prompt, the auto-saved password only contains one character (is it coincidence that it's the final character of the password?). I can click on the cogwheel alongside FF's saved-password entry which takes me to the entry in the list from which
I can copy the full password, so it's not insurmountable, but it's a minor pain. I've tried deleting and re-adding the entry in FF's Saved Logons -
    same result.

    The router is an EX5601-T0.

From what I can see you need to do a factory reset and then use the
default username and default password on which should be on the unit label.

For factory reset press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds
until the lights start flashing. It does mean you will have to rebuild
the config but that shouldn't be too onerous.

It's a brand new unit - supplied by Quickline for their FTTP service -
so it's still got its initial config apart from a few IP reservations
and port forwarding rules. The admin username/password are still the
defaults that are printed on the label.

I've just checked the behaviour in Google Chrome and MS Edge, and it's
the same, so it's not a Firefox problem: password is saved correctly but
only echoes one character (again, the last one) in the Password field.

Maybe now is the time to test Quickline's customer support?

It's probably some dodgy Javascript on the router, trying to do something
fancy like only showing the last letter of the entered password. Like
'please enter your sort code' where the field isn't a text box but is 6 one-character boxes with JS to shift the cursor from one box to the next.
Such things tend to confuse autofill. Paste is a different pathway and
maybe one works and the other doesn't, or something.

Not much you can do about it really. I suppose you might be able to use a blocker like uBlock Origin to stop the dodgy script from running, but that sounds like more effort that it's worth.

When you say only echoes one character, do you mean the router only
echoes one character, but the actual password was entered (i. e. gave
you access)? This _could_ be a security feature. Turnpike used to always
show 5 (IIRR) asterisks for a password, regardless of the actual length thereof; their argument, which made sense to me, was that showing the
actual number of asterisks was an aid to the potential cracker, as it
indicated how many characters _were_ in the password. I've been
surprised how few (possibly no) other situations have implemented this concealment.

But the following sounds more probable.>

Yes, with DX3301-T0, in fact all the browsers and Bitwarden all fail in
the same way, putting one character in. I have just memorised the
password and type it every time.

It echoes only the last character, and it seems that this is all that
has been entered because it doesn't give me access.

From other comments, it sounds as if this is a bug with Zyxel routers.
I've got used to right-clicking on the password field, selecting "Manage Passwords", seeing the saved password entry for the router's IP address
and copying the saved password, then go back to logon screen and Ctrl-V
to paste in the password, and press Login. Takes longer to type than to
do it. (These instructions are for Firefox.)
