• Loss of Landline

    From Jeff Gaines@jgnewsid@outlook.com to uk.telecom.broadband on Mon Aug 17 15:23:30 2026
    From Newsgroup: uk.telecom.broadband

When I renewed my broadband contract with Plusnet recently I lost my
    landline.

I logged on to Nationwide earlier to check something and decided to update
my details. Like hell, if you don' put a home 'phone number in you can't
save anything. In the end I put my mobile number in the box, it accepted
it but I see it has now reverted to my disconnected umber.

Looks as if there are still organisations that need to catch up with the
    21st century.

With plusnet, you can no longer choose to have a landline, though you
can choose to port the previous number to a voip provider ...

Yup. It still annoys me that so many still insist on using SMS rather than
    an industry standard TOTP authenticator.

Plusnet migrate any customers who want a landline to EE, both for
digital phone service and internet service.

I've come across the opposite problem: organisations that refuse to work without a mobile number. I've tried entering the landline number, but
some of them won't have that. I think that has even included some

They seem obsessed with mobile phones. If you give them both numbers
and tell them to call on the landline, they often still only store the
mobile number and call you on that.

The only way is to not give them the mobile number.

Now that my landine number is permanently diverted to voice mail I
thought I'd delete it from my Santander account, in favour of the
mobile number, but I couldn't, and neither could I put the mobile
number in the landline field. I think it's a question of organisations
not keeping up with what their customers actually do, or want to do.

It may be more security. Your mobile is sometimes used to receive SMS
security messages. I just checked my Santander details and I don't
appear to have a landline number just my mobile so its certainly possible.

What happens if you put +44- in front? maybe that will confuse it. What happens if you give it a free 056 number from voipfone? probably it will

My opinion of Santander isn't printable, after they made it extremely difficult for me to withdraw money from my savings account into my bank account as part of the funding for a new house. With 6 weeks' notice,
they still hadn't done it by the completion day so I had to borrow money
    from my parents.

They wanted proof of my bank account so I sent them a voided cheque (a
blank cheque with VOID written across it, which is the industry-standard
way of doing it). Not for them. After getting "your proof has been
rejected" (with no explanation) twice, I discovered that they wanted a
paying in slip (same account number and sort code), and it would take
too long to order a book of slips from my bank, so I had to drive for an
hour to the nearest town that had a branch of my bank (and
coincidentally a Santander next door), and got a statement of my account
on a NatWest headed letter. The branch couldn't accept it until I got
the Natwest woman went next door to "authorise" it. All that was done -
it took about half an hour. "Fine, we've verified your ID and your bank account" but that still didn't unlock my money.

I got -u200 compensation from them for the delay. The customer service
guy at Santander was really good and said that he was horrified and embarrassed at how inefficient and unhelpful the "back office" team
were. It seems that even their complaints department cannot tell when
back office receive a letter (eg my voided cheque or paying in slip) -
nothing is logged on their system until it clears the backlog of
scanning paper to image file which was taking 10 working days.

I took out the account when it was Abbey National. I've now closed it.
They excelled themselves in their unhelpfulness.
