I have noticed several times over the past few days if I 'tune' into
Sky TV online using my Amazon Firestick the programme is delayed by
about 30 minutes and requires fast-forwarding to real time. Any ideas
    about this curious phenomenon?

I just started watching sky news via the video player embedded in their website, compared to the broadcast version from my PC tuner, it was
delayed 10 minutes, but as you say could be fast-forwarded to near realtime.

Maybe 1 minute could be explained away by encoding/buffering/uploading?

The live version on youtube is about 15 seconds ahead of the version on
their website(but has no clock in the ticker-bar)

what app or service is the firestick using?

Thanks. I assume the app is 'Sky News' but how do I find out?

Isn't Sky News on Freeview channel 233?

Yes it is, low bitrate image. Also, this particular TV does not have
    an aerial.
