I have now connected my Sony Blu-ray player to my LG smart TV. At
first it would not work properly (blurred image, strange colour). I
think was because a set-up process is needed - not just a case of
plugging it into the HDMI port. However, although the Blu-ray works
fine, with a standard DVD the sound level is substantially lower. Is
    this normal?

Depends what you mean by "normal". It's unlikely to be a fault; there
are differences between the sound formats used on Bluray and DVD, some
aural (like increased dynamic range and multi-channel sound) and some electronic (like bit and sampling rates). Any of these might be handled differently by the TV to give a lower volume.

If you're lucky, the TV will have a "volume equalising" setting, which
will allow you to turn up the gain on that input, and/or a volume
setting on the player which might be turned down.

Otherwise, I'm afraid you're stuck with it, sorry.

Some can't adjust the output levels if it's anything other than 2ch audio.
