• Hisense TV problem - won't turn on until power cycled

    From Chris Green@cl@isbd.net to uk.tech.digital-tv on Wed Mar 25 12:55:19 2026
    From Newsgroup: uk.tech.digital-tv

My MIL has a Hisense 55 Inch 55U7KQTUK smart TV. Recently it sometimes
won't respond to the remote to turn it on. The LED changes from white
to red (or is it the other way round?) but nothing happens, the screen
    remains blank.

If the TV is powered down and then up by pulling and replacing the
power plug it recovers normal operation and the remote works as
expected. However the problem repeats, it has done it three or four
times in the past couple of days.

I have checked the batteries in the remote, they're OK.

Has anyone any idea what might be going on?

Note: my MIL does tend to press every button in sight on the remote
so she **may** be getting things into a strange situation. However one
would hope there's a way of recovering apart from power cycling the TV.

I have seen something similar on a Samsung TV. The remedy in that case
was to disconnect the TV from the power supply for some time, overnight
maybe. This seemed to clear the problem for a few months. The theory is
that it takes some time for the TV to fully discharge and clear whatever
grot was stuck in the system.

Has she pressed the "source input" button? If the last thing watched on
the TV was, for example, from a PVR and both are turned off at the same
time - without changing the source to the TV itself - then the next time
the TV is switched on from the remote it will go straight to the PVR. If
that is still off, then the TV gets no signal so remains blank even
though the TV's power light shows it as being on.

If the TV is powered down completely by pulling the plug, the next time
it is turned on it goes to the default source - i.e. the TV itself.

I had the same problem with my TV (a different brand) recently, but in
my case replacing the remote's batteries fixed it. I suppose it's
possible that the power on/off key could have become worn from repeated
use, so that when depressed it no longer makes contact with what's
beneath. A relatively cheap and easy solution might be to replace the
remote rather than trying to repair it.

Incidentally, don't most TVs still have a built-in on/off button? If
that Hisense model does and it's easily accessible, then turning the TV
off and on there might be an easier alternative to removing and
    replacing the plug.

We have three Sony Bravia sets in various parts of the house. The oldest
on is a 27" unit (non-smart, obviously). It does have an on-off switch
as well as the usual row of buttons for channel changing and volume
control. We soon realised it wasn't big enough when placed further back
than the previous CR TV had to be, and bought a 43" non-Smart TV (about
ten years old). We were also given a 43" smart TV about six years ago
(a relative moving out of the jurisdiction). Neither of them have any
obvious controls other than those on the remote control.

For me, other annoyances also needing power cycling.

I'm very close to mounting a standard wall light switch close to the TV
so that the following PVR boxes can be power cycled when they play up.

    - Humax Aura EZ 2TB
    - Manhattan T4R

The Humax was bought after the Manahattan started suffering lockups 2
years after purchase. I've factory reset the thing, but it still does it
    - even when run of an UPS. I blame faulty software, and apps. It's
"going on a journey" when I get the teething bugs of the newly purchased
Humax trashed out. The Humax is a botched Freely/Humax DVR Android
thing, that is not well integrated between recording and on-demand use.

Actually, I'm not that impressed with the software of either of these.

I wonder if it's possible to emulate the original TiVo on a raspberry pi
and make it work with their DVB-T Hat? Or write my own PVR software from scratch using cron scripts and terminal commands...

My BT box works when switched on but does respond to the remote unless
you turn it off and then back on (using the remote.

Just been migrated to EE so received a EE box so will be interested to
see if that has the same 'feature'.

By 'disconnect the TV from power supply for some time'

I always unplug from the mains every night - is that the same as what
