• hbbtv problem - help anyone?

    From Woody@harrogate3@ntlworld.com to uk.tech.digital-tv on Fri Mar 20 09:21:05 2026

My wife has taken to watching Talk on channel 280. This is an hbbtv
channel AIUI that needs the aerial connected but gets the programme from
    the Internet.

We have Samsung and LG 32in smart TVs that work perfectly on 280. We
also had a Philips (badged) 24in in the kitchen which worked but the TV
itself was a nightmare to manage.

We replaced the Philips yesterday with a Samsung 24in smart TV which
works well AFAICT but will not work on 280. For comparison 255 is
France24 and that works perfectly, but 280 progresses as far as the
station logo with 'Loading....' across the middle and goes no further
not matter how long I leave the set running. Samsung also have 'Samsung
TV Plus' where the station is on 4557 and that works perfectly.

I have tried Samsung Tech Support but the (oriental?) woman/technician I
spoke to could not understand the problem. A check of the system shows
we are getting 54% signal level and 100% signal quality so she insisted
the signal was not good enough - but failed to understand/accept that
the programme actually comes off the Internet (we are on VM M125.) It
matters not whether the Internet feed is cable or wifi, the same things happens.

Anyone got any ideas or come across this sort of issue before?

Well, I'm not familiar with this arrangement, but to me it sounds like
an internet connectivity issue: TV not set up to connect to your WiFi correctly, or cabled incorrectly? Firewall problem?

I dont know much about it, but .... on my telly

Nosey TV is live right now on 278

    Rok is live on 265

    Revelation is on 266

    ChannelBox TVP is on 271

    Puppose Media is on 279

Channel 280 appears dead, but the EPG says the channel is called "Talk"
and should have a program called "Ian Collins " on it right now

Thats out in the sunny Anglia region off Sudbury - but if its internet

Ah, now that makes sense. I presume you got the prog info from the
channel number extended logo? You should have then got a pale blue
screen with "This channel is not available" in the middle, then after as
much as a minute it should go to a black screen with larger white text
across the middle saying "Loading: this may take a few moments..."

After usually about 5-10 seconds it changes to the station logo which is
a black disc with an orange edging (looks a bit like a solar eclipse!)
on a dark blue background with a sharp orange point lower right that
could conceivably make it look like a 'digital' letter Q. Across the
middle in smaller white text it just says "Loading......"
Depending which way the wind is blowing that logo should be replaced by program after a few (10 on a bad day) seconds.

I use France24 on 255 as a comparison - if Talk doesn't want to work but
F24 does work to me it suggests a sending issue rather than receiving at
my end. Point of interest what make/model of TV, screen size and age are
    you using?

I am receiving off Emley Moor but can also get Bilsdale. Neither
work.(We are about 5deg off the direct line between Emley and Bilsdale
at very similar distances.) Our outdoor multibeam failed about a year
ago so I temporarily (ha!) replaced it with a dual beam log periodic in
the loft and its still working. From my original post you will see that
the Support Tech said my signal was not good enough at 54% signal level,
100% signal quality. This afternoon I removed a 2-way passive splitter
in the feed to that specific TV which increased the signal level to 90%
but it still did not work.

More and more I get the feeling that this is a TV/software issue and
nothing whatsoever to do with signal sourcing be that off air or
Interweb. I saw the other day that Samsung had it appears inadvertently deleted iPlayer from their feed. Hopeless?

I rarely bother with hbbtv channels because on my Panasonic it appears
to be completely random whether any channel at any moment will actually
work. 30 minutes ago 280 gave a black screen, just retried and it worked perfectly (if you can call "Plank of the week" perfection).

Just to clarify, our 32in Samsung smart TV (now about 2 years old) works perfectly on the HbbTV channels via cable or wifi. The problem TV is
only a week old and it seems to work on all of the hbbtv channels
(251-289 in Freeview numbering) that I have tried but NOT on 280 which
is the Murdoch owned Talk (as was Talk.TV) channel. However it works
perfectly on the Samsung TV Plus channel (4557) which suggests it is
something in the TV software that is blocking that specific channel.
Add to that that the station part loads getting as far as the station
logo with text 'Loading.....' superimposed (locally generated I suspect)
    and no further.

I think I recall that a few weeks ago Samsung did an over air software
update which wiped the BBC iPlayer logo/access off their smart TVs! My
problem is now back with Samsung and I hope to hear from them in the
    next few days.

France24 and that works perfectly, but 280 progresses as far as the
station logo with 'Loading....' across the middle and goes no further
not matter how long I leave the set running. Samsung also have
'Samsung TV Plus' where the station is on 4557 and that works perfectly.

I have tried Samsung Tech Support but the (oriental?) woman/technician
I spoke to could not understand the problem. A check of the system
shows we are getting 54% signal level and 100% signal quality so she
insisted the signal was not good enough - but failed to understand/
accept that the programme actually comes off the Internet (we are on
VM M125.) It matters not whether the Internet feed is cable or wifi,
    the same things happens.

Anyone got any ideas or come across this sort of issue before?

I had never heard of hbbtv so I looked it up.Among all the descriptions
of what it is and how it works, I found:
"HbbTV still faces obstacles, such as security concerns and varying
    levels of device compatibility."
That suggests that perhaps it is not compatible with a newer Samsung?
