• Slow Horses - Apple TV - best way to watch for a month or so?

    From David@wibble@btinternet.com to uk.tech.digital-tv on Thu Jan 8 16:39:13 2026

I have a (sad) urge to binge watch Slow Horses.

I have looked up Apple TV and I see that it is 7 days free then -u9.99 a month.

Has anyone tried this deal, and if so how easy is it to cancel?

    Is there a better alternative?

    Cheers

I used to play Channel 4 and Channel 5 on catch-up and record them on
my PC, and I would then watch them on my TV set when it was convenient
even after they had disappeared from the streaming list.
But the two programmes I used on my Ubuntu system, Kazam and Simple
Screen Recorder, both stopped working. But if you can find a
substitute, that may be a way. Binge-record before your free trial runs
out, then watch as you please.

I don't remember exactly how I cancelled mine, but it would have been
via their website and I don't remember any difficulties. People cancel
and rejoin streaming services all the time. It's the thing to do these
days. As far as I know, cancelling payment doesn't usually delete the
login account, which will remain valid for a while, presumably in the
hope that you'll change your mind and start paying again.

I haven't quite decided yet if it's worth paying for one month just to
see the most recent series of Slow Horses that has been made since I
cancelled. Maybe I'll think again after I've finished binge-reading
    the books.

I might have stayed with Apple TV a bit longer but for the annoying
fact that most of the movies offered for individual rental were only
available if you ordered using an Apple device. Since I've never owned
an Apple device of any description, I couldn't watch these movies even
if I was willing to pay, so a proportion of the subscription I was
already paying was effectively for nothing.

    Thanks.

An Apple TV box looks moderately expensive and certainly dwarfs the
    monthly subscription.

Can you watch all the previous series of Slow Horses with just a monthly subscription?
I am not particularly familiar with streaming services since the most I
have done is piggy back on family owned subscriptions before they put the kybosh on that.

    Cheers

Yes, when I had a subscription all the episodes that had been made up
    to then were available.

Different streaming services have slightly different systems.

All the terrestrial catchup services have huge back-catalogues that
you can watch free with adverts, or you can pay a subscription to
watch uninterrupted. Sometimes all episodes of a series will be
available for streaming as soon as the first episode has been
broadcast, and sometimes they release them week by week with the
    broadcast episodes.

With Netflix and Disney your subscription lets you watch anything on
their respective systems with no extra payments.

With Amazon Prime, your subscription lets you watch most of it, but
some individual programmes, mostly movies, require a one-off rental
payment. Recent movies are the most expensive, but if you wait a few
months, the price will usually come down, probably dependent on how
    many people have been watching.

The Apple streaming system is similar to Amazon except that if you
click on some of the movies (Mostly popular ones) you get a button to
click saying "How to Pay" and it explains that you can only order
    these using an Apple device.

    Isn't that anti-competitive?

THis is forcing you to buy apple hardware instead of continuing to use
your Roku/FireStick/Nvidia Shield/PC to watch exactly the same content?

    Walled garden and all that....

It didn't 'force' me to buy anything. The only effect it had on me was
to persuade me to cancel my subscription, so they lost a customer to
their streaming service and never had me as a potential customer for
any of their hardware anyway, so their loss, not my problem. Plenty of
    other stuff to watch.

And plenty of other hardware that's cheaper and just as good.
