• Problems with HD channels

Looks like I've got a problem with the HD channel strength/quality. The
old Panasonic PVR failed to record the new "All creatures great and
small" on 105 last night. When I checked the PVR showed "No signal". It
was similar for 101, 102, 103, etc. The Panasonic TV seemed OK on those channels, but it's a lot newer. Signal strength on 1, 2, 3, etc was
100%, with signal quality the same. However, it was down to 17 - 20% on
the HD channels. Checking with the bedroom TV showed a similar issue,
although the SD signal quality was low too.

I'm using Rowridge here, and on checking the BBC website for transmitter faults found there's no problem. There's an old Labgear 6-channel amp in
the loft, and the aerial is a loft 18 element log. I'm wondering if the
amp is playing up as - other than the aerial and the coax from it to the
amp - it's the only common part. The aerial itself and the
connectors/cable from it to the amp have been checked and seem fine.

I'll nip round to Screwfix today and get a new amp. Of course, the amp
is powered by a cable connected to a distribution box, not a 13A plug
and socket, and so are the loft lights from the same box. :-(

    It's never easy, is it?

Where is the amp powered from, up the aerial lead perhaps? Wall-wart
knocked out behind the TV without noticing perhaps ...

The amp doesn't have a wall wart. It has an internal power supply and is actually wired into a lighting distribution box in the loft, not a 13A
supply as I thought, so I can access it with the loft lights on as
they're wired into the 13A supply.

The problem is solved! I didn't actually test the coax between the
aerial and the amp. The cable looked ok, and the F-connector at the
aerial end and coax plug at the amp end seemed fine, and I had unscrewed
the F-connector and tightened it on again, and pulled and replaced the
coax plug without any improvement. However, I had a spare cable with the
same connectors, and replaced the old one with it. All TVs and the PVR
are now working well, showing 100% signal strength and 80 - 100% quality.
