Strange errors on E4 Extra

I was watching E4 Extra (8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, obviously)
and the picture kept breaking up, with occasional "no signal"
messages.
I had a vague recollection that it was supposed to have changed
multiplex, so I checked, and yes it's moved to the PSB2 multiplex and
is using AVC. I did a channel update, after which it worked fine[*],
with the television reporting that it is on channel 43, which is
indeed the PSB2 multiplex for Black Hill.
So it appears it's currently broadcasting on both multiplexes (and my
PVR still finds it on 44). But in that case, what would cause the
picture break-up on the old multiplex?
[*] I say it worked fine, but the picture quality is awful during fast
motion.
