• Is there a Firewire adapter available.

I have several Sony and Canon Video cameras and I need to take off most of
the content from numerous tapes. One would think there would be an alternative.

You can get PCIe firewire cards for a desktop, also USB adapters (beware
there are some cheap junk ones out there).

If you've got a Creative Soundblaster Audigy card in your PC you'll find
that some of them have a firewire port.

You can't do Firewire over USB, but you can do Firewire over Thunderbolt.
The Apple adapter for that used to be cheap, but is now unobtainable.
Some Thunderbolt docks have a Firewire port but they ain't cheap.

Raspberry Pi 5s (and CM4s) have PCIe so you can get Firewire adapters for
    them:

but it's probably easier just to use an old desktop PC and get a Firewire PCI(e) card for it.

Thanks Theo, I have searched high and low. Thought a Chineses outfit might make an adapter.

Another option is a Sony DVD with hard drive recorder (such as the
RDRHXD series) with Firewire socket (Sony called it iLink).

No problem, I used to own one until about 20 years ago. Can't remember
    what I did with it.

You might have sold it to me. I have a half-dozen of them. They are the
very best DVD-R/HDD recorders. And ebven if not equipped with Freeview
tuner, can accept a signal from a ST box, Sky+, etc.
