• England v Pakistan, 3rd Test

    From John Hall@john@jhall.co.uk to uk.sport.cricket on Fri Sep 11 19:45:44 2026

Well that was a remarkable day, and a very entertaining one albeit a frustrating one for England. Perhaps their four-man pace attack is not
quite so formidable as the English media has recently been suggesting.

Pakistan seem to have found a huge talent in Razaullah.

I'm off on a cruise on Monday and won't be back till 10th October, and
won't be posting here while I'm away. By the time I get back, England
will probably have selected their party to tour South Africa. I imagine
in will include all eleven players from this Test, plus Bethell (who
should be fit again) and Carse. Assuming they take 16, there will be
three more. I imagine one will be a spinner - or at least a spin bowling all-rounder who's a better bowler than Lawrence - and perhaps one
    batsman and one quick bowler.

He was unfortunate not to get the Man of the Match award. After all, his performance will be remembered far longer than Lawrence's - but, of
course, thou shalt not give the Man of the Match award to a player on
    the losing side.

Meanwhile, Root has become the 3rd player, after Ponting and Kallis, to
make 1000 Test runs at each of 4 different grounds, and will surely
become the first to do so at 5 next year, as long as he plays at Trent
Bridge, where he is only 5 short.

Sorry - that's Player of the Match these days, of course.

I was thinking the same thing.

It's a little surprising that Tendulkar hasn't done so, since he has
more Test runs than anyone else - at least until/unless Root overtakes
him. Perhaps India don't - or didn't back when he played - have enough
grounds that they use often enough.

It's a little surprising that Tendulkar hasn't done so,

He didn't actually made 1000 at any ground, the most being 970 at Chennai.

    since he has

He played Tests at 15 different grounds in India, whereas Root has only
played at 9 in England. However, apart from Lord's, where Root has
played 25 times, the number of matches for the top grounds is similar.
Root has played between 10 and 13 Tests at each of the 5 other main
grounds in England, and Tendulkar played between 9 and 13 at 7 grounds
    in India.

Root has now made more runs (7,664) in home Tests than Tendulkar did
(7,216), or indeed than anyone else, having overtaking Ponting's 7,578
    during the previous Test.

Thanks, David. From that it looks as though Tendulkar must have made
more runs in away Tests than anyone else.

Yes - 8,705, just over 1,000 more than the next most (Dravid). Root is
3rd on 6,327 (or 4th on 6,614 including neutral venues, with Younis Khan
    2nd on 8,201).

I just noticed that Jordan Cox took 5 dismissals (4c, 1st) in the second innings. It appears that he is only the 2nd player (including
substitutes) to take 5 wicket-keeping dismissals in a Test innings
having not originally been selected as the wicket-keeper. The first was
Imrul Kayes, who took 5 catches while standing in for Mushfiqur Rahim at Wellington in 2016/17.

I don't know why Cox's dismissals are not on this list:
