    I see that Norman Gifford's death has just been announced. with the
    reduction in first-class fixtures, he will be one of the last to take
    over 2,000 f-c wickets.

    Probably the last to do so (1987, retiring with 2,068 in 1988). Since
    Courtney Walsh finished with 1,807 in 2000/01, no-one has reached 1,500,
    and the leading current player is James Anderson with 1,143.
