If everyone was fully match-fit, then I suspect that the pace attack
that England would like to have would be Archer, Atkinson, Carse and
Stokes. Bur with doubts about the ability of all four to cope with a
full workload, that would be very risky.

Risky but England has NO choice though.
Since Lords pitch will be pacy and bouncy, probably bowlers won't have
to bowl too many overs.
Atherton wants to replace Carse and Tongue with Jofra and Gus Atkinson.
Boycott said Woakes is a spent force.

Clearly the curator either wasn't listening or wasn't up to the job. :)
It's an even slower pitch than the one at Edgbaston which, combined with some very disciplined Indian bowling and a little seam movement and
swing, scuppered any attempt at Bazball.
It was good for England that
Root, Pope and Stokes played for the most part well-judged innings, generally not trying to be more ambitious than the conditions and the bowling allowed.
Rather surprisingly, although it was only the first day, some balls were already turning for the spinners, suggesting that Stokes made the right
call at the toss. Another advantage of batting first was that it gave
Woakes and Carse more time to recover from their exertions in the
previous Test.
A lot could depend on just how serious Pant and Stokes' injuries are. Especially given the hot weather, the England attack could struggle if Stokes is unable to bowl. And of course India would be badly handicapped
if Pant can't bat, though at least Jurel seems to be an excellent keeper.
As usual the over rate was slow, though without the delays caused by the injuries to Pant and Stokes, and the bizarre mass ladybird invasion,
there would have been another five or so overs bowled.

I think the curator couldn't prepare a bouncy and pacy pitch because of
the hot weather "OR" it could be a psychological ploy on the part of
Stokes and McCullum to PLANT SEEDS OF DOUBT in Indian team's minds.
Eschewing bazball has more to do with England coming to their senses
that bazball WON'T work all the time in all conditions in every
situation and also the FACT that they can't take this India team
lightly despite India's not so good test record in England.

Gill should have brought Jadeja into the attack at least 45 minutes
earlier than he did, bowling the seamers for 47 overs.

Yeah pant's injury will sure HURT India in terms of RUNS and DISRUPTING >bowlers lengths and rhythm when India bats.

Right now the honors are even stevens OR England slightly ahead 55-45 odds.
Interesting day ahead tomorrow.
