What's going on with England's ODI cricket?

New Zealand beat England quite convincingly.

Blair Tickner and Zak Foulkes seal tense win to complete 3-0 sweep of
    England

England's top order struggled again in ideal seam-bowling conditions in Wellington

Very disappointing, especially - with the Ashes in mind - the repeated failures of Duckett, Smith and Root. It didn't help that Brook lost all
three tosses, given that it looks like there was some early moisture for
the NZ quicks to exploit, and NZ are a good ODI side, but even allowing
for that it was poor. The only crumbs of comfort were a terrific hundred
by Brook in the first match, Archer bowling well in the second (having
been rested for the first), and Jamie Overton's batting down the order -
but he's given up on red-ball cricket and so won't be among those going
    on to Australia.

To end on a more cheerful note, it was a terrific performance by India's
women to beat Australia in the second World Cup semi-final on Thursday.
The best women's ODI of all time, perhaps, with Jemimah Rodrigues's
innings possibly the best ever. Having lost three successive matches in
the group stage, India have showed a lot of grit to come back, and I'll
be rooting for them against SA in the final.

Or perhaps not JH. I saw lots of this game, esp the Indian innings, and thought the conditions were way too pro-batter, particularly when Oz
were bowling. The evening dew was so heavy that it was like playing in a
light shower with the bowlers really struggling to hold the ball. If it
wasn't for Healy behind the stumps (as opposed to in front of 'em) Oz's
15 wides would have been 30+.

When did the Merican "rooting" invade the UK?
It infested Oz several years and is the the process of destroying the Australian meaning of the word. I thought the UK would have resisted the cultural invasion better than Oz.

My 1995 edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary includes that sense of
the word, but notes it as being "US slang".

Collins (2003) has it as "informal" (no US marker), and "perhaps a
variant of Scottish 'rout' to make a loud noise", from Old Norse
    "rauta" meaning "to roar".

    Bloody Scots.....and Vikings...

I had one of those (sonar blip sound) memories. It was Ciccolino,
followed by the voices of Robert Robinson and Frank Muir. Can't
remember the other captain's name, maybe from a coffee advert.

    lol.

Hopefully there'll be some amusing "Root(ing)" banners during the Arses. Providing the Fun Police don't get all puritanical.

With better tactics India should have won at least two of those three
matches lost in a row in the league stage.

But I guess the three losses got the Indian team more focused and
determined and probably the law of averages also helped.

South Africa played well but I think they made a tactical mistake of NOT sending Annerie Dercksen, Chloe Tryon or Nadine De Klerk AHEAD of Sinalo
Jafta with an average of 12 and strike rate of 60 when South Africa was chasing at 123/4 in 22 overs.
