An interesting article in the New Scientist of July 7, 2007, gives a
good reason for going to church.
=============
Psychologist John Bargh of Yale University and his team asked
volunteers at their lab to work through questionnaires, the hidden
pupose of which was to rCLprimerCY some of them to words associated with old age. They used words such as rCLFloridarCY, rCLsentimentalrCY and rCLwrinklerCY. The
real test started as the participants left to go home, when the
researchers secretly timed how long it took them to walk down a long
corridor while leaving the building. Those volunteers who had been
primed walked significantly more slowly than those who had not, as if
the elderly stereotype had got into their very being.
In a similar experiment at the University of Amsterdam in the
Netherlands, psychologist Ap Dijksterhuis asked two separate groups of volunteers to talk to actors who pretended to be either professors or
soccer hooligans. Afterwards the subjects had to answer a series of general-knowledge questions, and the people who had been primed by
interacting with rCLprofessorsrCY did significantly better than those primed by rCLhooligansrCY. It was as though being in the presence of supposed intellectuals had rubbed off on them.

=============
Scripture says that "by beholding we become changed". All unconsciously,
the society we keep and the thoughts we think change us mentally and physically. Going to church may seem like a waste of time, but if we faithfully attend, constantly hearing words about goodness and
associating with people who aspire to goodness, will make us good. We
don't necessarily have to believe everything we hear at church or agree
with everyone we meet, but the unconscious influence of church will not
leave us unmarked with goodness.
God bless,
