Basically, extremes don't work. Too far left and you get communism, and
that has the intrinsic problem of low incentive. Why study to be a
doctor when you can get the same reward for being a dustman?

Then again, go too far capitalist, and it becomes ALL about money. So,
no free at point of need health care, no time off work, and so on. Just
as the Soviets were told how wonderful their system was, so the
Americans are taught to believe theirs is "The Land of the Free", when actually they are slaves. Slaves to the great god Money. Much of the
world has more freedom than the USA.

You can't serve both God and mammon...

There is much which is admirable about America, but taken as a whole I
think your assesment is correct. They have fewer holidays, higher taxes (though possibly lower direct income tax) and the whole culture can be oppressive.

You can't serve both God and mammon...
As you point out, both left and right are uncomfortable places to be. It
used to be that Britain was very much a happy medium but over the nearly
sixty years I have lived here the country has deteriorated, lost
    freedoms and culture.

Madhu, I am someone who when I was young loved American pop music, and
TV programmes such as Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, and so on. Indeed, the
first time I ever set foot on American soil in 1980 when I was 22, was
also the first time I'd ever been outside the UK.

So don't get me wrong, I love America and American people. But I hate
what is bad about America, and that is their over-the-top capitalism,
their lax gun laws, their lack of proper health care provision for all,
and their lack of workers' rights.

They now have a leadership that represents all the worst things about
America, and which is destroying their country. Worst of all is their 'conservative' fake Christianity which is incompatible with the Gospel.

My heart weeps for America, as it will weep for my own country if ever
Farage and his cronies get control here. They will take us the same way
as a certain orange idiot has taken America.

If you think Reform are bad, Rupert Lowe and his "Restore Britain" party
    are even worse.

Voting in the next general election is going to be a real challenge to
    decide who to vote for.

I have noticed that there is a very clear distinction between Americans
in America and Americans outside it. Those inside America are friendly,
kind, nice people (on the whole) whom it is a pleasure to know. However
as soon as they venture outside America they become loud, ignorant,
    intolerant bigots.

Whether it is that only that sort of people travel or whether it is a defensive reaction to discovering that the world does not revolve around
the US of A, I don't know. I've noticed the fact too often for it to be
    mere imagination on my part.

of course you are correct.....when i was at University Youtube
...facebook etc were not accepted as authoritive at all....

it would seem there is a European movement moving away from Microsoft

sources (which i did not verify)that seemed to prove that there is a big
move away from the Redwood giant to Open Source......at the time for

don't believe it. Redwood is completely invested in opensource. the

YouTube has its uses - not so sure about Facebook - but its major
disadvantage is shared by all video sources. A one hour program is about equivalent of a foolscap page of written text once you have removed all
the repetition, the silences while some scenery passes by, the inane
comments or questions from the presenter.

The only exceptions are nature programmes.

it would seem there is a European movement moving away from Microsoft products and into the Open Source eco system.

Splendid. I thoroughly approve of such a movement.

I don't see why God should not accept America as a legitimate nation. He
may disapprove of some of the things it does or the policies it pursues,
but it is certainly a nation state, just as valid as any other
    geographically or historically.

I have friends living in the USA and Canada. I visited USA on three
occasions, and on the first occasion I travelled from LA to NY. However,
I have only ever lived in the UK.

Personally I think religion should be much more about personal
development, rather than a means of controlling people. The Gospel
message couldn't be clearer, it's all about loving God and our neighbour.

I don't like to see certain people in the USA regime (or the Iranian
regime) trying to claim "God is on our side". God is on God's side.

    Tim.

It depends on what you mean by "controlling people". If religion will
persuade people to be honest, for example, I'm all for it.

He he. A good point. Of course, sometimes it may happen that God's side
is also the side of a particular regime. One thinks of God using Nebuchadnezzar to punish the Jews for their idolatry; Neb was keen to
expand the Babylonian empire and needed not urging to attack Jerusalem,
but nevertheless his efforts received God's blessing because God wanted
    a particular effect.
