Thanks. Actually, when doing a road trip in southern England a
couple of years ago, we stayed in Bath in a B&B just a few minutes
by foot from either the last lock to the river or the next few
locks up of the Kennet & Avon canal.
I discovered that when I watched a ridicuosly long and narrow boat (like
some of the boats docked a bit up the river in the town) to turn in the
river and insert itself into the entry to the first lock[1]. I followed
them all the way up.
