That adapter is the virtual network card (the tun/tap interface) used by OpenVPN and it is strictly necessary. The 10 Mbit/s limit you see is just a bogus hard-coded value which has no significance at all.
I'm trying to configure a virtual machine (VirtualBox guest running Backtrack 4) with a bridged adapter over a VPN connection. The VPN is is hosted by the cybersecurity club at my university, and connects to a sandboxed LAN designed for penetration testing against various servers that the club has built.

Working with several clients or partners might be an interesting challenge sometimes. While adding a new connection to an existing OpenVPN infrastructure I came across the following error message in the client log file: All TAP-Windows adapters on this system are currently in use.
Click on the entry Add a new TAP virtual ethernet adapter and confirm the User Account Control (UAC) dialog with Yes. You then see an administrative command prompt that adds another network interface to your Windows.
The AWS provided client cannot connect to the Client VPN endpoint and the following error message appears in the application logs: "There are no TAP-Windows adapters on this system. You should be able to create a TAP-Windows adapter by going to Start -> All Programs -> TAP-Windows -> Utilities -> Add a new TAP-Windows virtual ethernet adapter".
My guess however is that this MTU setting simply tells the driver to reject the packets bigger than the specified value 1. When you change it to something lower than 1500 (which is the default for network adapters), windows network stack still has no idea the MTU of the interface is changed. The driver responsible for the TAP virtual interface however, rejects bigger packets right away. This results in an effect similar to a link with broken PMTUD.
I installed the latest firmware for R6700 v1, downloaded and installed the scripts and files for Windows PC. Took awhile to search and understand an error: "TAP-Windows adapter 'NETGEAR-VPN' not found". The solution is to be sure to rename the Windows TAP adapter to "NETGEAR-VPN" inside Control Panel, otherwise the login will fail because OpenVPN cannot find the TAP adapter. Works great so far, glad to have the added measure of security. Will try to install the files for iOS next for iPhone X.
You might find that the adapter will re-appear inside Device Manager every time your system boots up. This situation occurs because some VPN programs have a startup service that checks for missing drivers and installs any needed driver automatically that is missing.
If you are unable to connect to a VPN network, you can check if the Tap adapter is installed correctly and if you find signs of corruption, you can reinstall it. Here is how to reinstall TAP-Windows Adapter V9:
    1. Press the Windows Start menu in the lower-left corner of your screen, then type in ncpa.cpL and hit Enter on your keyboard. This will open up your list of network adapters.
The only issue that would arise is if your VPN client is a virus or when the TAP Windows adapter V9 becomes corrupted. A quick workaround would be to uninstall and reinstall it to get rid of the corrupt files.
I have installed VMworkstation 6.5.1 build 126130 on my laptop running Vista Business 32 bit. After doing this, I found that other machines on the same network can't access the IIS or SQL Server 2005 services running on the laptop. If I disable the two VMware virtual ethernet adapters then the laptop's
What I did was to disable the wired network adapter using the bios setup utility. I don't know why disabling the wired adapter at the os level wasn't sufficient, but I guess that VMware is just happier if there is only one nic.
    1. Installing VMware workstation also installs two new virtual ethernet adapters on your Host. This confuses Vista's firewall into the Public Profile, blocking most incoming connections. To fix that you can run the following PowerShell script on your Host:
    2. When you configure a VMware Guest to use Bridged networking, VMware tries to automatically select a physical network adapter to bridge to when the Guest starts. Since your laptop has two adapters (Wired and Wireless), VMware sometimes chooses wrong. You can manually select which adapter to bridge to by running the VMware Workstation GUI -> Edit -> Virtual Network Editor -> Host Virtual Network Mapping -> change "VMnet0" to manually select which adapter you want to bridge with.
I just found another reason for this to occur. Sometimes the router's DHCP addresses will conflict with the address assigned to the VMnet adapter. In my case I bought a new router which used a default address of 192.168.0.1 instead of 192.168.1.1 as on my old router. I couldn't acess the internet unless I first disabled the VMnet1 adapter. After changing the router's address to 192.168.1.1 everything works fine. You can check which address vmware assigns to your network adapter under Edit -> Virtual Network Editor.
I found two versions of Logmein virtual ethernet adapter drivers in Device Manager, removed them both (with Hamachi still trying to run), then uninstalled Hamachi, then reinstalled, and problem went away. No idea why....
But this isn't quite as bad as it seems. In this article, we'll explain what TAP adapters are, what they're for and why they matter when you're running a Windows 10 VPN on PC. And once you understand just some of the background, you'll find you can fix most TAP issues very quickly.
A TAP adapter is a software-based network device which allows a VPN to securely communicate with its servers. It's such a fundamental component that if the TAP adapter isn't installed or working then some VPNs won't work at all, resulting in all those pesky error messages you know so well.
TAP adapters come in many different flavors, which can make life confusing. Some VPNs install a plain, ordinary, generic TAP adapter, but others have specially patched ones which only work with their own service. You might even have two or more versions installed at the same time.
Click the arrowhead to the left of Network Adapters to expand the tree, and look down the list of adapters. If you see 'TAP-Windows Adapter V9' then you have the generic TAP adapter installed.
But custom versions often have the VPN name included, too, like 'TAP-NordVPN Windows Adapter V9.' if you're a NordVPN user. If you're unsure, double-click a driver, click the Driver tab, then Driver Details: if the Provider or Copyright mentions OpenVPN then it's probably a TAP adapter.
Having two or more TAP adapters installed can sometimes cause problems, especially if you've also installed more than one VPN. One VPN app might try to use an adapter belonging to another VPN, for instance, leaving the second app to complain that there are no adapters available.
VPN providers recognize that this is a problem, and some apps include an option to 'repair' the TAP adapter, restoring its regular settings to help the app find it again. In the IPVanish Windows app, for instance, click Settings, Connection, and you'll find an Install/ Repair OpenVPN Driver option which could solve the problem.
You can also try resetting a TAP adapter by disabling and enabling it, the software equivalent of turning it off and on again. Right-click your VPN's TAP adapter in Device Manager that you found earlier, choose Disable Device, and click Yes when you're asked to confirm that. Wait a few seconds, right-click Enable Device, reboot your PC and try connecting to the VPN again.
Stubborn TAP adapter problems can be due to leftovers from a previous installation. We've previously been unable to install a new TAP adapter because it was blocked by a previous, damaged version, for instance.
If you still can't solve your problem, it's possible you can bypass it. Disable the NordVPN TAP adapter, for instance, and its app can't connect via OpenVPN. But switch to the NordLynx protocol (click Settings, Auto-connect, choose NordLynx from the VPN Protocol list) and it should work again.
Important: you will need to use the correct installer for your operating system. The Windows 10 installer works on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016/2019. The Windows 7 installer will work on Windows 7/8/8.1/Server 2012r2. This is because of Microsoft's driver signing requirements are different for kernel-mode devices drivers, which in our case affects OpenVPN's tap driver (tap-windows6).
