and some of us had complete mattresses stuffed with it - all held
together in a tough striped (featherproof) fabric which may have been
called "ticking"
... and I have a feeling that the other word you are looking for might
be "counterpane" ?

The down from eider ducks is extremely light and
expensive, most "Eiderdowna encoubtered in the UK were regular
chicken fearthers.

Perhaps this is where the low number of females in the group is letting
you down.
We have established that a quilt should only be an eiderdown if it has
the correct filling, but the OP was comparing them with duvets. The difference between a 'quilt' or eiderdown and a 'continental quilt' (the word duvet came later) was that a quilt stopped at the edge of the bed,
but a continental quilt draped untidily down the sides. It had to do
that because it was trying to do away with sheets and blankets. Which
was a nice marketing ploy resulting in you needing different duvets for different temperatures instead of just throwing one layer aside.

The first time I met a quilt on "the" continent (Austria, c.1970), it
was the size of the bed with a strip of cloth tacked on one side to go
under the mattress & hold it in place. I've no idea what it was stuffed
with.
The thing about doing away with the sheet is more washing for the replacement, which'll be heavier. Hence duvet-covers. I wish I could
find one that'd stay attached to the duvet.
And there's nothing to stop you putting a blanket over a duvet.

richard@qualmograph.org says...Yeah, I've just had a sheet below and an empty duvet cover above for
there's nothing to stop you putting a blanket over a duvet.
Or taking off the cover and just sleeping under that.

Plus also as well, an Eiderdown would be on top of your usual sheet and blankets[1][2] - whilst the duvet replaces those items.
[1] In the days of:
"Heating? In a bedroom!?! It's normal to have ice on the inside of the window."
[2] You can't do hospital corners with a duvet.--
Oh! Also the 'cover' on an Eiderdown would be sewn on, not removable.
