• sump plug "hack"

I changed the oil on my van a few days ago, but left it up on the ramps because I'm trying to fix the aircon.

I need the van today for something else so dropped it down and found, on
the floor, the sump plug washer.

    Bugger.

Annealed the washer, then started to dread all the fresh oil gushing out
all over the place, and whether I have a clean container I could catch
    it all in.

Then I remember watching someone fixing some hydraulic issue on a digger
and him holding the oil up with a vacuum cleaner shoved in the fller cap.

So I tried it, and it works. Not a drop spilt.

Hmm. I almost had this happen to me the other day when changing the
oil on my KLR650. I kind of thought it felt different when torquing
the plug down. Sure enough, when I drained the oil oil into the
recycling bottle, there was the crush washer. The difference was,
I hadn't put any oil in the bike yet, so nothing to leak out. Phew.

Which reminds me, I need to buy some sump plug washers (and oil
filters) for the next oil changes.

Easy! Fill a spray bottle with petrol and mist it into the suction
hose with the vacuum cleaner switched on. This will take care of any
concerns about oil inside the vacuum cleaner.

Yeah I was a little nervous about that. I would not have been very
popular. A fair bit of gurgling but insufficient suckage to draw any oil
up. The other possible danger was drawing in fumes and them exploding,
but I convinced myself that wouldn't a problem with a diesel. It didn't explode, so perfectly safe, right?

Excellent. Don't forget to video it to show other people how easy it is.

Excellent. I'll probably spray in a couple of cans of EZstart and a
litre or so of brake cleaner just to be sure it's clean.
