I think I posted here before about the SO BSA A7 having lunched a big
end. I took it to a machine shop (guy I have used before for other
stuff) and he said he could do all the work (crank re-grind, line bore a
new main bearing etc. no problem)

More than 6 months later he still hasn't done it. Lied every time that
he'd just started it, would have it done by tomorrow, yada yada.

    I've had enough.

Messaged him to say I need it buy the weekend or I'll find somewhere else.

Why is it so hard to find people to do stuf?

Because specialists like that have more work on than they can cope with
    if they are any good.

The VMCC lot will know of an alternative.

I am very fortunate to have an honest-to-god machine shop in my
town that specializes in "powersports" engine machine work. Lots
of snowmobile cranks being re-done, cylinders bored, heads renewed
with proper 3 angle valve grind, etc. Started years ago by a sole
proprietor, now employing multiple people and apparently quite
successful at drawing business from all over.

my brother repairs accordeons and melodeons

he stopped adding repair requests to his waiting list about 5 years ago
when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was not expecting to see his 75th birthday recently but advances in neurosurgery moved the goalposts. He
    still has back orders.
Now, he's gigging again with a new band, so the repair business is on the
back burner. It was always supposed to be a side hustle to life as a
    musician.

I've found an alternative, and have given the original guy until the
weekend to do the job. I don't mind it taking a long time really, it's
all the BS about when it will actually be done that I find annoying.
He's obviously got work coming out of his ears - mostly high end high performance stuff, so I can understand I'm not important to him, but
just say "I can't do it" instead of playing me along.

Indeed. The CNC chap that did the gear bushes for the SO Morini engine
rebuild that has permanently stalled did one job very quickly (custom
small end bush), but kept putting off the gear bushes one.

I put off jobs that have a frighteningly real chance of fucking
    something up badly.

And the number and chances of that happening appear to increase with
    age. Hopefully not logarithmically.

I'll happily take a logarithmic increase over an exponential increase,
    any day!

    Assuming p is the probability of a fuckup, p = k * ln (t) vs
    p = e^kt, where t is time and k is a positive constant .
