I use Xnews from a Dropbox folder. It runs from the .exe file without
needing to be installed in Windows. Profiles and more importantly the kill
and score files are shared on whatever device is used to view.

I like Thunderbird as a general email client, because of the powerful filtering tools and multiple account possibilities. Point taken about a portable lightweight dedicated newsreader though. I don't bother with
anything but Gmail in a browser when away in the van with a small
laptop. Phonews on Android is pants. The iPad Newstap thing isn't bad
but the only thing I really got that for was the Liva (pre-diabetes
on-line health coaching) app, and for SWMBO to test her mates' theories
that the iWhatever ecosystem is easier to use (she played with it
    briefly and never uses it).

Xnews is written in Delphi, so very much my era. I will give it a go.

When I find a tuit, once the new NHCA timing system software has become stable, I may get Claude to write a decent modern version.

Anyway, an opportunity to update my sig. TBH, as the years rattle by
with ever increasing perceived velocity, I'm conscious of constructing a
sort of bucket list. Also on that is a recurve bow ,"for my own self",

I've been using it for a very long time. Despite no updates since 2009 it still works. Before Dropbox, I had it on a USB stick to share across work,
    uni and home PCs.

The spam filtering using a score file is very good. This was essential in
the days when there were thousands of genuine posts and tens of thousands
of spam posts each month in the heyday of UKRM.

Well that is in the essence of SSDs over HDDS innit?

The old one was fine. Went for a cup of tea and when I came back reboot
was underway with - no boot media found.

All the really important stuff was in the cloud or backed up. I took the opportunity to restore selectively as a chance to have a good clear out
of lots of "that looks cool software, let's try it" clutter.

Indeed, I had always assumed that it was excessive temperature wot does for
'em in the end(like HDD's)but this article has other ideas.

The old one was fine. Went for a cup of tea and when I came back reboot

I had a Maxtor 300Gb that did the same about 20yrs ago. As there was some
important stuff in it I found somebody on a forum who reckoned it could be
the controller pcb. Yet another somebody had a fucked drive(same family
different model) and was willing to share the pcb. It duly arrived in the
post and I optimistically fitted it to my hdd. Shoved it back in the PC and
pressed the button. Whirr clunk and......nothing, nada. Deeply depressed I
sent the pcb back from whence it came and screwed the original pcb back in
place. I don't know why but I then put the Maxtor back in the pc, started
it up and.....it worked!!!!Risen from the ashes it was. Quickly retrieved
all the priceless data and went off to celebrate. That drive kept working
for at least another 10yrs until it eventually got replaced by a bigger
    one.

My news.rc file is stored on a Raspberry Pi 5 on my network, and I
just use an alias to copy it to each computer that I access news from.
After reading UKRM I use another alias to create a .bak version on
the Pi 5, and copy the updated news.rc back.

All the other files I need to recreate my Usenet experience are
duplicated across at least a half dozen computers so it's pretty easy
to just copy them over to a new setup. KISS.
