• FOAK query: Uploading photos from several sources/people to a temporary area

    From chrisnd @ukrm@chrisnd@privacy.net to uk.rec.motorcycles on Tue Jul 14 15:37:57 2026
    From Newsgroup: uk.rec.motorcycles

Hi, I run a website which contains many photographs sourced from members
of a dance group. Up to this point in time we have used proprietary
services from email, through third party file transfer services, to
messaging services such as WhatsApp. However, all these have proved problematic one way or another. So, since we have a good deal of space 'spare' in our hosting. it would seem logical to use some of this for temporary holding until I can download and use them.

Therefore, what I am looking for is some means whereby different members
could upload photos etc to a specific folder (one per event where we
perform) and from which I could download a whole batch after a couple of
weeks for later processing and uploading to our website - before
    deleting the folder.

I would envisage this happening two ways - firstly on a computer/laptop
by means of drag and drop etc. - secondly using a mobile phone by
'sharing' in some way to the specific folder. Either way, it needs to
be able to be done by people who are not particularly computer
literate... (I would add that whilst my own skill dates back to
original html, I am somewhat behind on current website design!)

As each upload folder would only be in operation for a few weeks
maximum, I am not too worried about them being filled with spam etc but
would expect the folders to be sub-folders of the /members/ folder,
which has basic password protection. Using this would also limit
uploads to current members - but that should not really be a problem as
this is the route 99% of photos reach me.

Our provider is Krystal, which has much software available, but I would
be grateful for any pointers as to how to achieve the above.

    Cheers,

    Chris

If it were me I'd try to use something intended for photos rather than
prat about with folders. Albums make more sense and then your photos
would be already published. eg google photos, or, still my current
favourite but needs a fair bit of setup - immich.

Immich looks a nice piece of software - and apparently works with both
android and a computer web interface.
That looks good - but I can see member management being an issue - which
I really don't want to have to get involved with. It is also why I
didn't simply succomb to the Google suggestion that one of our group
suggested - not everyone has a google account anyway :-)

I'm looking at several ideas at the moment so may come back and have
    another look.

    Thanks for the pointer,

    Chris

I did something like this once with Dropbox. You can create a secret URL
where people can upload photos/files, and they appear in your Dropbox
account. The uploaders don't need accounts to do this, and can't see other uploaders' photos. "Incoming transfer requests" they call it.

I think I just paid for a month of Dropbox, which is now minimum -u10 a month or -u84 a year (!).

I wonder if any of the self hosted solutions also do that. It looks like
'File Drop' is a feature in Nextcloud, of example: https://nextcloud.com/blog/file-drop-convenient-and-secure-file-exchange-for-enterprises/
(although that has the scary word in it - 'enterprise')

    Someone's developed this https://github.com/Nasogaa/immich-drop which
might be worth looking into. Not sure how the security might work but it doesn't need a login.

Yep, I have my own nextcloud server and use that for sharing. Downside
is the VM 20MB upload so a bit slow.
