After the recent posts about trips to France, I thought I'd join in:

    https://nronketti.wordpress.com/2026/07/05/six-pack/

It's quite long, and very self indulgent. Best get yourself a cuppa if
    you intend reading it all.

    I quite enjoyed it

9 years since I was last in the Jura & Savoie Alpes.

We had an overnight in St Claude but I do not recall riding Col de la
Faucille so that's one for a return visit, if I can pull myself away from trips to Spain and SW France.

Must have done it one year, I think it was with Porl, Simian and Ginge
around 2005 ish, I recall dropping down into Gex, where we stayed that
night, but only hazy memories of the pass itself. We'd come down from
Alsace and already ridden several spectacular bits through and over
the Jura, would have come down the N5 from the North through Morbier,
which I also vagualy recall, along with bits of that road.

Oddly enough I have an almost picture memory (very unusual for me) of
the outside and parking of the hotel we stopped at that night.

Having said that, a distraction into the world of google maps failed
to find it, it looks like the whole thing has been replaced by a much
    bogger modern building.

Thanks, it popped up on my RSS feed and I did read it all.
We had intended to go through the Col de lrCOIseran the week before you,
on the way to Briancon, but it was closed until the 12th. Instead, we
headed further south and west to Vercors - the Combe Laval road (D76)
really is spectacular - before heading back east, then south through the
    Col de la Bonette.

Unfortunately the Speed Triple popped its rear shock, so the rest of the
    trip was quite bouncy.

Going off somewhat OT, It is nearly 60 years since I was in that area as
part of a school exchange program. The family I was staying with (in Cuiseaux) had relatives in St Claude who were old pipe makers (Ie the
smoking variety, not the Stanton & Stavely or PlusPlumbing variety) and
they told me it was known as the town of the pipes. I don't know if it
    still is?

Either way, they had huge stocks of pipes they had made and not sold.
They gave me a couple: one, a huge lion's head and the second, that
bastion of French literature: Shakespeare! :-/ - which just happens to
be on my desk as I type this.

I was also taken to see the, then new, huge dam at Genissiat - which
    they were suitably proud of
