However... V and I are staying a bit longer in France as part of the
French Run, crossing back to the UK late morning on Tuesday 5th May.
Consequently, we need somewhere for the night of Monday 4th, within an
hour or so of Calais. Somewhere sympa, to wander around for an hour
or two, have a drink in a nice bar, etc

Well, most people on this thread seemed to say "Bruges", so yesterday
I finally got round to it and booked a night in Bruges...

Martin's Hotel Bruges. Used it a couple of times on my OAP trips. City >centre, underground garage, not cheap but lovely.

    ...and, serendipitiously, I booked Martin's Hotel! I didn't trawl
back through this thread first, but Martin's was the most central
place with parking, and it seemed and OK price, too

Thanks for everyone's help, especially to the Wessiepedia :-)

now you can look forward to figuring out the one way system in Bruges. The
car park and main entrances are in different one way streets.

Just ride to the car park entrance here in Kartuizerinnenstraat https://maps.app.goo.gl/wEiwr9PVSKK9KNqt9

press the intercom buzzer and they usually open the door to the bunker parking. If not, send madame around the corner to reception in Oude Burg
