Today, working on the shite old bsa, I managed to clumsily knock a chunk
off the skirt on one of the pistons.

    Arse.

Started researching replacements only to find they are not very common,
    and mostly -u-u-u-u/$$$$.

After much searching I found that I have almost certainly fitted the
wrong ones all those (~50) years ago.

The right ones are higher compression, and I found a pair for a
    reasonable amount.

I always thought it should go better than it did, now maybe it will,
after I get the crank sorted, and it all back together...

Oops. Always easier to fit a decompression plate to lower CR than to
find a quick way to raise it. Have I told the tale about how I did that
on the Vintage Raleigh 350? No, not by stretching the rod.

Are C&D Autos still going? Used to be up the road from me in Acocks
Green when I lived in Olton, apparently now in Henley-in-Arden (if they
    are still extant).

The VMCC forum suggested C&D and some other possible sources of SOBSA
    pistons.

Had forgotten all about C&D. I used to go there a *lot* (lived in
    Sparkhill as a student)

I always remember they had one of lots of different BSA models that
    their dad had collected.

Vale Onslow seem to still exist (on ebay at least) as well.

I got the pistons for my A10 from Thorntons, near Shrewsbury.

They have a couple of units on an industrial estate in
Bordesley Green. Last time I looked the site of the original
shop on the Stratford Road was still just a hole in the ground.

Sadly Peter Vale-Onslow passed away just recently.

    Cheers.
