I want to grow carrots in a container and I have a choice of two growing media - either Miracle-Gro Peat Free All Purpose Compost or very old and tired compost which became available when some small shrubs were moved

The Miracle-Gro doesn't look very suitable for sowing seeds in as the consistency is very much more "compost-y" than soil-like, if you get my meaning.-a I know that one should not add manure to soil in which carrots are to be grown but I fear there will be no goodness at all in the pre- loved compost.-a Should I use one or the other or a mixture of both?
For feeding my plants I rely on a liquid seaweed-based fertiliser or long-acting granules such as Boost.-a Should I use either or neither with carrots?
We grow our carrots in an old water tank because our soil is heavy
clay/silt and not suitable. Used to use Growbag compost and sand mixed
but lately the Growbags are coarse and, as you say, not suitable. I
would mix the Miracle Grow with sand and some of the old compost.
