Maybe three or four years ago I had the idea to propagate asparagus to
grow wildin the grass along the edge of a sort of orchard area at the
foot of a south facing stone wall. A rubbish idea it turned out that
asparagus as bought is not even fertile and able to propagate and wild asparagus which will grow in rough coastal grass verges is something altogether more rare but in any case some crowns of aspargus root were
more or less buried under grass clippings on site and forgotten.
I see I now have several established asparagus plants - single tall
stalks emerging from the nettles along the wall. I wouldn't mind getting
a small crop one year, but how do I get one? I am thinking cut
everything - asparagus and grass and nettles - right down to ground
level for a few feet around and cover with more mulch/grass clippings
and hope for the best.
Is that a plan, even for next year?
