Geraniums (zonal pelargoniums) were only available as cuttings?
My recent plants are still in flower and for the past few years, I have
pruned them as perennials with success.

I don't remember zonal pelargoniums ever being available as cuttings
only. They've always been available in pots all year round.

Down here*, the "winter survivors" started a few years ago with gazanias lasting through the winter. More recently, quite a few osteospermums
have survived in well-sheltered places, and last year some pelargoniums
made it through. In heavy frosts they'll all suffer damage, although it
helps if they haven't been watered and there's been no rain.

*South central Hampshire, although semi-rural. I would guess that in
most decently-sized cities many supposedly tender plants would survive
pretty well in the heat islands that they are growing in.
