I just bought a very cheap usb stick player and fm am radio. The stick
player and radios fm which is stereo seem very good, but the am picks up this ticking noise. It appears to be coming from the innards of the device making most medium wave stations unmistakable. Having asked about it seems this a known issue. Its the ram stick polling pulses that detects if the
stick is in and switches mode. You can prove this as I did using a manual
mode switch with the stick in, then the tick turns to a whining noise
    instead.
Fo just over 18 quid though, would you expect more?
