    You could place single mono amps adjacent to each speaker and feed them through coax from a pre-amp- or even use Ethernet converters but you
    might not be able to get the same quality or bandwidth from the latter.

    Thanks - trailing the preamp wires is much the same as speaker cables I'd have thought?!

    Just to partially answer the question of 'why', which has cropped up
    elsewhere:
